Then homer effectively kept Weber out of the east and freed himself up to move on other deals.

Really a win win.

Oh, 100% agree. Brilliant move by Philly and Holmgren. Love that dude has brass balls and not afraid to make a move he thinks will improve his team.

Aside from the ridiculous amount of $ included in a bonus, I'm not sure that what they did was filfthy. There are definitely some poison pills in there, but the cap hit is manageable and Holmgren basically negotiated the deal for Poile, limited the places he could go and took away the impending UFA circus.

Like everyone has said, if Nashville has the $, they'll match.

- eburgio

The cap hit isn't really even a relevant consideration for the Preds, it's all about the cash and having to layout $27 large in the space of 12 months - and what if Suter has made it known that he wants out even if they match the sheet because they won't be able to spend what's necessary for other players to build a Cup winner.

Great strategy by the Flyers - there was no way they could agree to a trade with Poile because he would be asking for Giroux, Schenn, Colburn - all the Flyer's best young players. Draft picks - who cares - they could all turn out like Kyle Beach.

If Nashville matches ..there handcuffing them selves ....if not Philly gets Webber ....Nashville gets 4 first rounders .... Philly just forced Nashville's hand.

And because the team that accepts the offer can NOT trade that player for 1 year from the acceptance date. Nashville couldn't trade him until 7/19/13.... His second bonus is due on 7/1/13. They would foot the bonus. That's $14 million now, $13 more on 7/1/13. Pretty ingenious and ruthless on Homer's part.

Not to take anything away.... but from a business standpoint doing it any other way wouldn't have made much sense.

Great move by Philly. If they think they'll be in the mix for the Cup every year, which they do, those picks will likely be in the 25-30 range. They can always acquire other 1st round picks, which they could turn around and do tomorrow if they felt compelled to move Voracek or Simmonds. I'm sure a bunch of other GM's thought about it, but none had the stones to do it

McD has probably sent down word to Stan's basement office to open negotiations this afternoon with Toews' agent on a 30 year contract. He wants to be able to announce a deal tomorrow night.

They could also trade roster players to Nashville to get those picks (or some of them) back.

Nashville was going to pony up for Suter, they'll put up the cash for Weber and end all of this speculation in due course. Can they afford not to?
