The more I think about it, I don't think that's a terrible idea. Sure $27 million is a tough pill to swallow in one calendar year (and like Al mentions, I think that's the only way Nashville doesn't match is if they literally don't have the cash to do it.) but you have him play a year, then try and deal him again next summer if you don't want to be on the hook for the other guaranteed money. Only the big market teams would be in play and able to afford that contract, but at least you get players back this time instead of all futures. - hawkfan79
Read meltzers flyers blog on this website. I think it would be more as he says.... a Chris Gratton like transaction.
I don't care how deep a teams pockets are.... no one swallows $27 million for one year just to trade a guy. |

Good read, and yeah, it seems rather unlikely to deal a guy after ponying up $27 million....but then there's the other fact of the other $70 million+ due on that contract. When I look at it, they have a few options:
a)match it and keep him the rest of his career (really expensive, but possible)
b)match it (because you just don't want to get only futures for him, and intend on trading him down the line, I think sooner much rather than later)
c)let him walk and take the futures
As far as near term (and even possibly long term competitiveness), b seems to be the best option for Nashville if they can't straight up afford the contract over time. |

And because the team that accepts the offer can NOT trade that player for 1 year from the acceptance date. Nashville couldn't trade him until 7/19/13.... His second bonus is due on 7/1/13. They would foot the bonus. That's $14 million now, $13 more on 7/1/13. Pretty ingenious and ruthless on Homer's part. |

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about LTIR. I still don't fully grasp it. The gist of it is teams do NOT want to dip into it. Its not as simple as Pronger is on LTIR so the flyers can spend $5 million on another player. - moylander
As I understand LTIR, you don't just get to use it because a guy is hurt. Say the Flyers cap was $70M and they were sitting at $68M. Pronger's ~$5M LTIR wouldn't kick in, because they have $2M in cap space. However, if they want to sign a guy for $4M, which would put them at 72, they would then drop Pronger on LTIR and their cap hit would be $67. It's an ace up your sleeve, kinda thing. The team still has to pay the player, but there are likely insurance policies they have on certain players. Under the same scenario, if Pronger retired today, the cap for Flyers would be $65M, accounting for his cap hit because his deal is a +35 and older.

If anybody else here takes an annual trip to nashville to catch a hawks game, the loss of suter and weber should bring down ticket prices a bit after they just raised em a ton for "prime" games. |

Something like that but its even more complex..... something like 'banking' LTIR, etc. |

I don't think you can bank it. I could be wrong, but I thought that was in place like an emergency fund. I know there's a lot of cap circumvention with these deals, but I have to think banking LTIR would fall under that.
If you're inclined, Capgeek has the CBA. I got bored one day and tried to download it, but it froze my computer. |

You remember what I said around July 1 that Ed Snyder and the Flyers would be heard from one way or the other - they don't sit around and watch the Penguins and Rangers and Caps get bettter without doing something significant.
Somebody called what Philly did to Nashville dirty, filthy and ugly - but above all savvy business. Truer words have never been spoken.
As it relates to the Hawks, I doubt McD and Stanbow would even have the brains or creativity to come up with something similar if they really wanted a player. |

Aside from the ridiculous amount of $ included in a bonus, I'm not sure that what they did was filfthy. There are definitely some poison pills in there, but the cap hit is manageable and Holmgren basically negotiated the deal for Poile, limited the places he could go and took away the impending UFA circus.
Like everyone has said, if Nashville has the $, they'll match. |

Then homer effectively kept Weber out of the east and freed himself up to move on other deals.
Really a win win. |
