If a club is going to give 4 -1st rounders it only makes sense if they are already a solid playoff team and..

I can see taking the risk on Weber considering his age and position he plays.

I don't see how Nashville can't match the offers sheet, if it is only $10 mill more over 14 yrs.... but this might not be over so quickly.

They are banking that Nash can't pay $28 million to Weber w/in the next year. Read meltzers blog.... its a really strong write up.

The timing of this plays right into Bowman's hands for his speech at the Convention.

McD introduces him as the smartest GM in hockey because he locked up Brent Seabrook at under $6M per year, who everybody knows is as good or better than Shea Weber. Now teams are destroying themselves trying to acquire or retain Weber who has never won anything.

Isn't it great to have a GM like Stanbow? Long live the Bowmans!

I think that's a cop out. Flyers haven't had their own 1st round pick for 3 straight seasons until this draft. What they do well is scout and get undrafted free agents like read, bobrovsky, hovinen, kessell. They also trade proven talent for developed prospects (I.e. take less gambles at the draft and let other teams farm the talent). I Always hear the hawks have a young core and think... they do? Philly doesn't have a 'core' per say..... but if they did they are much younger. Many weren't even drafted by Philly.

They do.

Avg age of the guys you've tagged as Philly's core 23.6

Bolland-26
Hossa-33
Sharp-30
Kane-23
Toews-23
Shaw-21

Hammer-25
Keith-29
Seabs-27
Leddy-21

Avg age 25.8. That's still pretty young. You may disagree with Leddy and Shaw being identified as "core" players but I include them in the mix as guys they are potentially building around.

I don't think there is one.

Go back and read RickJ's post. That might be the angle they use. Or at least one of the angles they use.

If Bowman is not listening to Ogi and talking to Col about Statsney, what about an offer sheet to Ryan O'Reilly?
- powerenforcer

Unfortunately I'm sure they woulld match. Unless it was Weber-like. Even though I have mentioned O'Reilly all summer. I don't think he is worth that

The front end money will be the only reason Nash won't match....And they might not have the $$.

I wrote awhile ago...Preds put themselves into a corner by hesitating...primarily due to ownership issues.

They locked up Rinne and should have resigned either or both Weber/Suter to longer term deals sooner..

Similar to what the Hawks did with Toews, Kane and Keith.

Now Preds put themselves into a position to lose 2 of 3 key players...and also lose a ton of tix sales as well.

That's assuming those 2 key players (Suter and Weber) wanted to stay in Nashville. If they wanted out there was nothing Poile could do.
