I wouldn't want the Hawks to offer sheet a Shea Weber, the compensatory picks would be ludicrous. Would not have a decent pick for years. - ArlingtonRob
Maybe I'm missing the point here.....
You would or would not give 4 first rounders for weber?
What were the last 4 first round picks for the hawks that were their picks (not traded for)? Would you trade them for weber?
The fact it was an offer sheet is irrelevant. The offer sheet was done for many other reasons including to force poile into a decision so the flyers can get weber or move forward with other deals (Ryan, Nash, etc). It was also to keep weber out of the east, like Pittsburgh or new York.

To answer your question, it depends on the team. With Philly and their collection of young players, It makes sense for them.
I was pondering the same idea for Weber/Detroit back in June. As old as Detroit is, giving up four 1st round picks for Weber would be a tough call. It's not like Detroit is stocked to the gills in high end talent in their system.

2009 (28) - Dylan Olsen
2010 (24) - Kevin Hayes
2011 (18) - Mark McNeil
2012 (18) - Teovo Teravainen
Those 4 guys for Shea Weber @7.78 m per year for 14 years ??
Id probably would make that deal If I was the Hawks the window is closing.
If the window was closing now, wouldn't you rather keep them so that you can build around them (Teovo and Saad especially) when the window reopens? - 1goalLordStanley
Not from the Hawks point of view because we still have Toews. If he only wins 1 cup that would be a terrible shame.

It's safe to assume it would be something around 5 years down the road, you'd still have Keith (maybe Hossa), you don't think Toews would stick around to continue to be the captain and veteran mentor for the young guys? Elias is still with the Devils. They've at least competed since winning the Cup(except 2010-11) with somewhat of a new roster and I would think its safe to assume the Hawks would too if they gutted some of their roster.
So yes, I would keep the youth and recent draft picks instead of snagging Weber, perhaps Bowman is doing the same?

I don't know brother , one play 1st round exit and 1 more year closer to free agency Im not sure what Toews would think.

Saad is an example of a quality 2nd round pick. Not a 1st rounder.
If Bowman is not listening to Ogi and talking to Col about Statsney, what about an offer sheet to Ryan O'Reilly? - powerenforcer
After Bowman re-acquires the two picks he traded to Winnipeg, then he could offer sheet O'Rielly. Unless you're ok with offer-sheeting O'Rielly for Weber type money and coughing up four 1st rounders?
In short, forget about Bowman handing out an offer sheet to anyone.

I think you have to pick your spots with free agency. It's pretty hard to try to build a team through free agency in any sport. Having a strong farm system is a must and being able to trade to improve your team as well. The jury is still out on the Hawks farm system but as far as being able to improve the team via trades the Hawks have not done so well in that area. It would be nice if they could go out and sign some of these guys like Weber but with all the money committed to the core it's not easily done.

If a club is going to give 4 -1st rounders it only makes sense if they are already a solid playoff team and..
I can see taking the risk on Weber considering his age and position he plays.
I don't see how Nashville can't match the offers sheet, if it is only $10 mill more over 14 yrs.... but this might not be over so quickly.

The timing of this plays right into Bowman's hands for his speech at the Convention.
McD introduces him as the smartest GM in hockey because he locked up Brent Seabrook at under $6M per year, who everybody knows is as good or better than Shea Weber. Now teams are destroying themselves trying to acquire or retain Weber who has never won anything.
Isn't it great to have a GM like Stanbow? Long live the Bowmans!
