How about Wideman getting 5.5M a year
Mike Green getting 6M a year
40yo Ray Whitney 4.5M a year for 2 years.
Adam Burish 1.8M a year for 4 years
to name a few. - ArlingtonRob
Those are fairly valid examples. However, Whitney was going to get $4.5 for at least one year from somebody because he can still play at a high level. Burish getting what he got is ridiculous but teams like him as a good guy to have in their dressing room.
Green is a gamble but has the potential to be worth $6M - if he can ever stay healthy. Once Wideman left, Green was in the driver's seat in negotiations. |

Rick, it's not that I don't like it...I'm kinda neutral really...whatever works.
I suppose any system will have big flaws and problems. Perhaps a luxury tax for choosing to exceed the cap? Greater profit sharing with the lesser clubs?
If the league wants to maintain 30 clubs, 15 cannot struggle tp stay afloat financially.
Conversely, if the players want a free market for their services, they also need to realize that many teams will struggle to complete for the best players. Without good players, poor teams struggle, fans don't attend....a negative feedback loop sets up....teams can fail and jobs will be lost.
Jeez...I can see why these negotiations can last forever. - ArlingtonRob
I don't have the answer but it seems to me that if there is a $70M cap, teams better have revenue streams that bring them in $90M annually or they lose a bunch. How many teams have $90m coming in - probably only NYR, Toronto, Boston, Philly, Chicago, Montreal, Vancouver, Washington, Calgary and LA.
That dictates revenue sharing - and what big owners want to do that. I'd rather see the league back at 24 teams. See ya later Columbus, Anaheim, Phoenix, NYI, Nashville, Florida and even New Jersey and Carolina. |

Slim, but if they did, would you really expect Stan to be a player? |

So I haven't written here in a while because well... why write when your rumors are Luongo and Hasek. But I wanted to talk about the convention.
1) Will people ACTUALLY boo him like they say. Things change when you get out behind a screen.
2) Will Bowman have any good news to bring? If his good news is Hossa is healthy, based on how this offseason is going, that's the best he can bring.
And I can't wait for JJ's blog... he had mentioned he was waiting for the convention. Hopefully its some good news, and not him analyzing how terrible our front office is (even though he's probably right) |

Currently players get 57% of "hockey related revenues" - so if the cap is $70MM, average team HRR is $123MM ($3.6B for the league - last CBA said players would get 57% if league revenues hit $3B).
Owners' initial proposal called for 47% to players, leaving a cap of $58MM - a 17% reduction, aboutv$360MM league wide shifting from players to owners.
I know, first cut, etc.... |

I was wondering what would happen first:
1)Stan signs a useful player
2)We get rain
at about 8:15 rain won
first significant rain since late May / early June (i believe)
and boy has it been a storm so far. |

Teravainen should be interesting...he's only 17 and looks younger...has alot of maturing to do.
Listed at 5'11" but only 165...wonder how much size he'll add? - ArlingtonRob
Just saying, physically, from the neck down, he looks like a young Pavel Datsyuk. Skinny, but athletic and capable of adding strength.

To respond to my own message:
Hard to believe that the league as a whole is losing money if average team revenues are $50MM above players share of revenues - teams are losing money, but the league as a whole shouldn't be. |

Ligitimate arguement and only time will tell if he has the hockey IQ to be a special player. Solid coaching would help but thats not going to happen. I fear he gets traded to a team with good coaching and becomes everything i think he can be and part of that is him paired with a physical defenseman and a solid goalie that allows him to be aggressive offensively. Hockey is a team game and Leddy needs a supporting cast - molly2522
I think you over-project leddy. He will be a serviceable defenseman in the league IMO. A 3rd pairing now, probably 3/4 dman later. I watch leddy play a lot and he reminds me of rookie Eric Gustafsson on the flyers. Both are small, skilled skaters with good puck handling skills and both get manhandled in their own end (especially on the boards). I can see them both being more like ogie said.... Oduya.... rather than Lidstrom, or even to a more realistic high end comparison of a Timonen or Enstrom. |

No disagreement, Al. if you've been reading this thread, you know how skeptical (and a little angry) I am about all this Saad nonsense.
Shaw's 34 game numbers extrapolate to a 25 goal season. I think the Hawks should be glad if he is an even player, has 150+ hits and 20 goals. Very glad.
Cuz I'm not sure you're ever going to get much more from Shaw than you did in kind of a storybook rookie year.
To me, and you touched on it, if Nick Leddy is your #3 defenseman, he MUST take a big step forward. He really did not belong on the second pairing last year, certainly not 20+ minutes a night.
To me, if Sharp is not going to play center, Kruger is the guy, as Bolland really has to be your shutdown guy. Will Kruger get stronger this offseason? And will that translate to more effectiveness at the dot? And to more confidence with the puck? He has upside.
Again, it comes back to Leddy and Kruger, two 21 year olds, 2009 draftees. How much can they step up? And honestly, that's a more appropriate ask than expecting Saad to play a meaningful top 6 role. - John Jaeckel
JJ..... this was probably the best post in this thread. Way to keep the conversation grounded in reality.

btw is anyone else fed up with the whole phoenix situation? Just move the team out of that city and be done with it! Would love to see a team in milwaukee, that would be a great rivalry with the hawks, and close proximity. - Wowo2282
I agree. Milwaukee would be a great add...perfect landing spot for the Blue Jackets. How many people does the Bradley Center hold? |

17,500 or so for hockey, I think.
However, I'm doubtful Milwaukee could, or would support an NHL franchise.
The Admirals never really drew very well when I lived in Milwaukee, even with ridiculously cheap tickets.

There are other markets that would get a shot first. Quebec and Seattle would probably be the top two. |
