How can players take owners claims of poverty seriously:

Houston, in 2 years, will apparently be paying Jeremy Lin and Omar Asik almost $30MM.

Lin and Asik!!!

For those of you that are ripping on molly for choice of words, here's the definition you need to look up from Merriam Webster:

Similar: having characteristics in common : strictly comparable

This does NOT mean exactly the same. Characteristics in common.

So let me see -- Lidstrom:
excellent skater in his prime
very good at closing the gap between defender and opposing player
uses his stick effectively as part of his arsenal of tools to defend
very good shot and effective at getting shot through from the point
knows when/how to pinch without getting caught up-ice
excellent passer, solid break-out skills

Lidstrom was never the most physical player, he excelled at taking away time and space and in his decision-making on ice. One of the best at the point on PP.

Nowhere do I read that Leddy=Lidstrom in molly's choice of words.

- savvyone-1

Where I see the biggest issue in comparing Leddy's potential to Lidstrom is in hockey smarts. Lidstrom was perhaps the smartest hockey player to ever play the game. His instincts were second to none. As far as Leddy, he is without a doubt very gifted, but his hockey IQ doesn't seem to be that great IMO. This is where a gifted player separates himself from the others and is a special player. Not saying Leddy doesn't have the tools to be a special player, he does, but I just don't see it from a mental aspect.

The coaching could use an overhaul. I'd like to see how it will improve after that.

Sorry, been at the range all day watching people who couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat but claim "I know how to shoot". Kinda like Stan, they have no follow through. Looks like I did not miss much. Just got my Shaw shirt a week ago, be pissed if they trade him in that "deal" for Lu. Another day, another heated Luongo exchange......to quote Adam Sandler in Wedding Singer "whoopidee doo!"

JJ,

Please start a new thread. Just make something up, Eklund does it everyday.

Here are some ideas:

1. The Hawks throw an offer sheet at Versteeg.

2. Towes and Lucic were tweeting each other.

3. Bobby Lu was spotted with a real estate agent in Berwyn.

Don't mean to brag, but a poster is making more press than the hawks this offseason...look what happened to me the other day....

That's still pretty solid IMO. There might be more upside -- unfortunately, you now have 3 coaches that do not have the ability to mentor Leddy and also make sure that the clown shoe skates are permanently retired (meaning, don't ask a clown like Montador to skate the puck up because he's incapable of that task).

I was hopeful the assistant that was to be named would have had some sort of pedigree in that regard. Instead we get another one of Q's useless buddies.

A 70 pt player for a 70 pt player then Miller for Crawford? Chicago comes up aces with that trade.

[quote=Al]To be clear the defense is better I wasn't disagreeing there.
Oduya is a decent #5 on a good team...slotting him as #3 could be an issue although imo that will be Leddy.

But at forward and overall team play???

A lot of eggs being put in the Saad basket and the hope Shaw can translate his output last season over the entire course but....

There wasn't enough done to acquire a center who can win faceoffs, or a screen setter and those 2 points are beyond not finding a 2nd line center.

The Hawks last season couldn't hold onto the puck and when they clamped down on defense the offense was lacking.

Has enough been done to make a real difference???

No disagreement, Al. if you've been reading this thread, you know how skeptical (and a little angry) I am about all this Saad nonsense.

Shaw's 34 game numbers extrapolate to a 25 goal season. I think the Hawks should be glad if he is an even player, has 150+ hits and 20 goals. Very glad.

Cuz I'm not sure you're ever going to get much more from Shaw than you did in kind of a storybook rookie year.

To me, and you touched on it, if Nick Leddy is your #3 defenseman, he MUST take a big step forward. He really did not belong on the second pairing last year, certainly not 20+ minutes a night.

To me, if Sharp is not going to play center, Kruger is the guy, as Bolland really has to be your shutdown guy. Will Kruger get stronger this offseason? And will that translate to more effectiveness at the dot? And to more confidence with the puck? He has upside.

Again, it comes back to Leddy and Kruger, two 21 year olds, 2009 draftees. How much can they step up? And honestly, that's a more appropriate ask than expecting Saad to play a meaningful top 6 role.

Agree...

I wasn't betting on marked improvement for this season coming down to elevated expectations from a 19 yr old and 2 -21 yr olds...but that is where we are at for now.
