Any reasoning behind Kompon wanting to leave a great situation in LA to come to join his old pals in Chicago?

LA's going to be icing the same squad as last year essentially which gives him another chance at a cup.

- TyCamScore

I think it is a case of Sutter, who came in at mid year, wanting to pick his own guy as an Asst.

Kompon's contract wasn't renewed, which means it wasn't his choice.

I'd try Arnott on a one year deal.

I like the ideal too.... if Toews goes down again for a period of time.. it kills us without another center who can win draws.

"Just by the numbers Morin looks to be more of what we need"

What the other poster said.

You're right, I'm the bad guy, stick in the mud what have you for being somewhat cynical about your hero, the uncrowned 2013 Calder Trophy winner, Brandon Saad.

Couldn't be maybe that your blind faith, on the other hand, is a bit unreasonable? Nahhh.

- John Jaeckel

I think you're being rather belligerent putting words in my mouth considering the part you didn't highlight:

I've never said or indicated he'd ever be a superstar, or that he should be here over Rockford, because I do agree he's not ready.

The thing that you, and tons of other people talking about the future and prospects, don't get is that everyone here is a fan. You're insinuating that everybody who isn't sold the FO spin is out to bash the Hawks and the FO decisions. I don't want to speak for JJ, but myself as a fan, nothing would make me happier than for Saad to come up in two seasons and be a star. I mean who wouldn't? Everyone here wants the Hawks to win championships. The point is that we are even talking about 19 year olds with no experience to help the team, or to plan for the future, is stupid because this team has to win now, or it may never come again with the group. So I'd say stop even talking about the prospects unless its for a trade for an NHL player, because none of them will have a positive effect on this season

Just have to say it . . . man, that would be sweeeeetttt!!!!

Can't wait til Ogi and Philco weigh in on the latest butt-buddy hire by Q.

I hear the networks are gearing up to make a new version of "All In The Family" starring Scottie Bowman as Archie, Stanley as Edith, Q as Mike, Kitch as Gloria with supporting roles of McD as George Jefferson and newly hired Jamie Kompon as George's son Lionel.

I don't disagree. It is however even more discouraging that a large chunk of the Kings' fanbase wanted him gone. Sounds a lot like Kitchen. Just saying.

Eeeek... I wasn't aware he was being let go.

This sounds about right with Q making this his big splash this summer. How long before Barry Smith gets a call to help out with the Hawks PP again.

If it's one thing I've seen under Stan Bowman is that they're not afraid to bring up a rookie ahead of schedule and let him learn while on the big club. Two years ago it was Leddy, last year it was Kruger, this year is most likely going to be Saad. But Jesus, how about we let the kid play more than three games before we make any kind of declaration on his career.

Silliness.

The question is, is this their MO or are they doing it out of necessity?

If the average salary is 2.5M you can take 2M from one guy and give it to another. That gives you a 4.5M guy and a 5ooK guy. Once you want to give somebody more than twice the average (Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa, Seabrook and Keith) then you have to take money from a third slot. So you have one high priced guy and two small salaries.

There are 8 slots to hide low end salaries; three press box guys, three 4th liners, the backup goalie and the 6th defenseman. So if you have 6 high priced guys you need 4 more low end salaries.

That means you need prospects in positions that you normally don't want them to be in. Leddy, Kruger, Stalberg and Bickell are the reasons the Hawks can afford Sharp and Hossa on the team. The problem is that those contracts are up at the end of this year.

So they need to be replaced by Shaw and potentially Saad. You just don't have a choice, you have too many high end salaries. You are going to be playing prospects in slots you don't want until either the Hawks trade some of the "core" or the salary cap goes up into the mid 75M range. And it looks like the cap is going to go down, not up.

The Hawks are probably not going to be able to resign all four of those cheap contracts. So probably Bickell and somebody from Kruger, Leddy and Stalberg aren't going to be back. And people need to stop complaining about "losing" those type players like they did with Brouwer. The Hawks simply can't afford those level players until they get their salary cap issues resolved.

So you need to embrace playing players like Saad before you would prefer to. You simply don't have any choice. Unless you are willing to give up a player like Hossa and/or Sharp that is...

The economics are a factor but the Hawks played well under the cap for the entire season....There was no need to worry about pennies because there was about $6 mill in cap space vacant.

That's a little more than unfair JJ. All Bus has said was if this is a wasted season (right or wrong) that Saad may as well get a year of seasoning under his belt. I don't agree with that idea (he needs time in the A and the Hawks needs someone ready now), but nowhere did Bus tout him as a star or predict a Calder for him. I know you don't like the FO pushing this kid on the fans like he is a savior, but you seem to get awfully testy when his name comes up.

The earlier poster had it right, Saad has become quite the lightning rod on this board for some reason. Kid isn't going to have a chance whenever he arrives in Chicago with some of you guys.

Al,
Jamie sounds like the PERFECT guy for the job.
Q wouldn't want someone that would buck his system or upset his kingdom. Now he's got his perfect little world, surrounded by know-nothings that have career track records of failure. No real need to go out and hire a smart candidate.

I think Q just sealed his fate and will end up hanging by his own petard.

Trying to look at the glass half full here, but is it possible that he was brought it to bring a little bit of the King's defensive style to the Hawks?

To further piggyback on this....what would you like the FO to say? At a convention where you're supposed to be hyping yourself for the season? "We failed at improving the team....we are very conservative with transactions so we didn't make any?". Of course they're not going to say any of that stuff....at the Blackhawks convention. Most people don't want to hear that stuff (even if it might be true). IMO people get WAY too hung up on what the FO says on the record. Maybe I'm just more cynical than the average person, but I almost don't even pay attention to "on the record" words anymore.

It's pretty simple to me, I'm not going to judge them until the trade deadline next season. Maybe the team with the kids will be good enough to improve, maybe they've tried to improve, but the prices were too absurd for their tastes, maybe they were too conservative and missed out on a few deals. If Rocky is as committed to winning as people say he is, then the team will have a bad season and he will clear house. Until that happens, I'm going to wait to see what happens....keeps my blood pressure down

100% agree only you can't excuse or omit McDnough. NOT ONE of those guys comes to work here for John McDonough, unless the guy is desperate and/or brings baggage with him.

Point being, if/when Bowman goes, don't be surprised if McDonough does too or already has.

- John Jaeckel

If it comes to that, how hard would it be for Wirtz to fire McDonough - the guy he lured away from a secure position (don't know where he'd be under Epstein, tho) - could he pull the trigger or move him somewhere else?
