The kid from the Air Force looked good too but he is already 23. 1st post , hope it is helpful. - Gary0301
Perhaps they give that kid an AHL contract and use him as filler? |

I guess Modano is thinking comeback, and has already talked to the Red Wings.

Interesting. I can't help but wonder why a 40 year old guy would come back to play for another team after spending his whole career in one place.
I hate it when people stay too long at the party for money. Go out a class act, find yourself a hockey ops job, and enjoy your millions! |

....And go and play for the same head coach that didn't dress Modano in the playoffs before he retired.
Maybe this says something about how the Wings roster looks now.

Ken Holland get a ton of love in here, but jeez that would be a terrible move. It was a terrible move the first time he came to detroit. That makes stan bowman look like a legit NHL gm. Well nvm he signed bruno. |

Right now Holland has got to be getting desperate. He's lost two top 4 defenseman before free agency even hit, and struck out big time on Suter. He hasn't replaced either Lidstrom or Stuart in the defense.
Holland is going to have to make a trade soon to at least fill one of those holes. If he doesn't, Detroit isn't looking too good for this coming season. |

I think most teams hype-up their prosppects. Especially their top ones. I still don't read too much into a prospect camp. I think the main camp is a lot more important for the top prospects. I do expect saad to make the team and be solid. I don't like this Saad at center experiment, though |

I made the mistake of not looking, I didn't click the link because I thought Modano was quoted the other day as saying he thought he had some hockey left....
It was a response to a question about the Wild and wanting to go back in play in Minny. |

This from the Buffalo News July 14, 2012
The Sabres are one of several teams needing a center, and they can never have too many leaders. They're young and inexperienced with Derek Roy in Dallas, the free-agent market dry and very few trades around the league. Modano said he would need time to get in shape, but would consider coming back. Imagine his career in Buffalo, of all places.
"Oh, my god," Modano said with a laugh. "There's a sour taste in my mouth with the way [my career] ended. I thought it could be more of a fairytale departure. I don't know if I'm still looking for that or what, but I'm not totally pulling that option off the table." |

I was at camp on Friday and Saad was dominant. He scored 2 goals and pretty much controlled the corners. Whenever he wanted to get to the net he was able to . Even with 10 seconds to go in the scrimmage and his team trailing by a goal , he managed to take it end to end , beat the d-man around the edge and get off a quality back-hander at the buzzer. he has gotten bigger from last camp and should be an offensive contributed this year with the big club. Danault was busting but all over, McNeill was invisible. Clendening looked very good as well as Gleason on defense. The other d-man who could get to the show is Dahlberg. He has decent size and can move the puck. Teuvo (sp) looked very shifty and just needs to grow up. He reminds me of Savvy. The kid from the Air FOrce looked good too but he is already 23. 1st post , hope it is helpful. - Gary0301
Welcome, Gary............ How much did Saad play center while you saw him, and how did he look there?..... Too bad that the Hawks are taking a kid who is on the cusp of helping the big club and trying him at another position.
I saw a super quick video of the Finn while Whitney was in goal. Whitney to me in that little vid looked damn agile and quick for a kid that tall. Looked real square to me as well...... Any comment on Whitney or any of the other goalies in what has to be the thinnest of all NHL franchises' goaltending pipeline?
Also how did the Cossack, Maxim Shalunov, look to you. He was raved about on this site early in the week.
Heard Garret Ross plays with some grit. |

I did hear, though, that Modano would like to play one last year in Minnesota following a good offseason by the Wild.
EDIT: Sorry guys....late to the show on this one. |

Hi Ricochet. I read where Saad asked to play center knowing the Hawks lack of depth there. He very well could be the big center man we are missing. As far as Cossack or Shalunov , nothing noticeable. All of the goalies had problems with rebound control. The goalie from bowling green got faked out of his shorts twice on break-aways back hand to fore hand. Ross did play with a lot of energy. My impressions of possibilities to make the Hawks this year were 1. Saad (for sure) 2. Danault (energy guy) 3. Clendening, Gleason (long shots with trades made) ....Hayes and McNeill have a ways to go. look for Dahlbeck on D as a dark horse.

Take a breath because you are incorrect on a number of levels.
I never said Bernier can't be a better goalie someday than Crawford. You can say he is now, but I won't because Bernier has played only 48 games as a pro, Crawford has played in 122 NHL games. I don't know where you are coming up with one good season in 14 years as a pro for Crawford. Also if you want to project Bernier as a top goalie no problem but for me sample size matters a lot, especially for a goal keeper.
My contention, although you keep beating the drum for Bernier is Lombardi isn't going to send him to the Hawks to be the #1 as you say, unless there is a big over payment. He doesn't need to reach for a trade....There are a list of teams that will want to acquire Bernier and Lombardi won't be forced to trade with a playoff rival.
Seeing that you keep heading down a blind road my point in bringing up Leclaire and Mason earlier is they were thought to be franchise goalies after having vg pro years and basically fell apart afterwards.
Projecting what a goalie can become after 2 full seasons is tricky...after 48 games it's not worth the keystrokes for me.
I spin nothing....I never said Crawford was the chosen one...The Hawks did when they let Niemi go.
What I will say is the reason the Hawks had an up and down season last year and lost in the 1st round again was not only because of Crawford.
No one is going to help the Hawks...Bernier isn't going to fall intotheir lap,and unless Bowman gets creative and aggressive Crawford/Emery will be the Hawk goalies to start the season. - Al
So in actuality Crawford is a better comparison to LeClaire & Mason as a goalie who had a very good pro year and then just fell apart and you are right with me saying Crawford only had one good season. Using his 10-11 0.917SV% as the benchmark he has had 3 good seasons in 14 years. Also, I never said Bernier was a lock to be a top goalie but rather that he is a better option than what the Hawks currently have and that he may possibly provide the long term stability that the Hawks have lacked for many years. On the other hand, there have been many people that know more about goalies than you or I put together that believe Bernier will be a top goalie.
We are just going to have to disagree on this whole point. Apparently you think it will take a 1st, Saad, Leddy or some outrageous combination of pics, prospects, & players and I don't. Stan will have to overpay to some extent especially compared to an EC team but like I have said from the start if Stan can put together a deal that improves LA Lombardi will trade him. Bernier has made it very clear that he wants out and has wanted out since the TDL and the longer Lombardi holds on to him and he rides the pine as a back up getting very little playing time his value gets lower & lower.
Just out of curiosity though. In your opinion are the Hawks a better team, a more competitive team with Crawford & Emery or Crawford & Bernier?

Thanks.......... Didn't know Saad had asked for a chance playing center. Did you happen to see a goalie named Troy Grosenick? He's a free agent after completing 4 years of college at Union. I've seen him plenty in junior, but haven't since then. At 22 yrs old he should be fairly refined.
Any thoughts on Whitney other than poor rebound control? Did he look in balance, square, quick, well positioned, use is size well in taking up space, play in his net or at the top of the crease?
