Hooray for Captain Spaulding: we tried to remove the tusks. But they were embedded so firmly we couldn't budge them. Of course, in Alabama the Tuscaloosa.... |

Players are free to pursue other lines of work and owners free to invest their capital in other ventures. These are free people free to enter into contractual relationships for their talents and services.
To split hairs, pro sports is entertainment...not a sport. As true old fashioned sports fans like most of us are, it is something that many of us fail to grasp. This changed late 80s early 90s in most sports. Its when Old Commiskey went bye bye...along with a dozen other coliseum type parks.
Owners need the kind of players you refer to, if they want to be able to charge 100 per seat, they still could find quality hockey players...people who know the game well and play it well. You could pay them 40 to 50 k a season and charge fans 10 bucks a seat...or something like that.
I know I am all over the place, but someone said it best when looking at pro sports owners and unions/players...IT is millionaires fighting with billionaires. - TrueGrit

The way I look at it is they'll probably settle for 1/2 of what they're asking for.
50-52% revenues
7 years to unrestricted FA
4 years on entry levels
I think they'll stick with 5 year max contracts. This keeps everybody in the game when it comes to signing people.
The big question is will the players accept another salary rollback.
There's also a mindset that the owners could care less if the season starts on time where the players do care. So this could ugly.
Don't forget, this is Bettman, the only ever NHL commish to lockout the players and he's done that twice. - djd
This actually hurts teams more then it does helping them. Small market teams won't make big deals for huge money and home grown talent will also be harder to keep because every 5 years your going to have to negotiate. The panthers are 21 mil under the cap and they made no moves at all for Parise or Suter (at least none reported). Their not in on Doan by all accounts.
Teams that spent the pick, time developing talent, all to see the guy walkaway after 5 years because your cap is too tight? Nah. Pass on this. I think there should be limit to the number of contracts they can have that are 10 years plus but no way restricted to not having them.
Can you imagine trying to keep Toews and Kane with only 5 year deals? Expect both to get Parise money, for sure on Toews. Kane is another story.

So here's the relevant section:
Capt. Spaulding: One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know. Then we tried to remove the tusks. The tusks. That's not so easy to say. Tusks. You try it some time.
Roscoe Chandler: Oh, simple: "tusks."
Capt. Spaulding: [shakes Chandler's hand] My name is Spaulding. I've always wanted to meet you, Mr. Chandler. As I say, we tried to remove the tusks. But they were embedded so firmly we couldn't budge them. Of course, in Alabama the Tuscaloosa, but that is entirely ir-elephant to what I was talking about.
