I think were out of the Doan running anyway .....i have no faith in SB to land any free agent of significance ....
- southernhawk

See to me significance is measured in fit, and not just dollars. Not saying, "cheap" but I'd still want Winnik for 3L and Hannan for 5D. I figure if I bang that drum long enough and light candles every night (OK it's really mortar shells left over from the 4th), something of "significance" may happen.

Or stan is being played by Doan's agent to get him and mcd to overpay big time
- molly2522

That's their job right? Don't have a problem with that.

And on that topic, if how JJ surmises and it being true, the 'Hawks brass is PO'd at Suter's agent for driving up the price....what a bunch of f(u)cking crybabies. The minute they put their hat in the ring for Suter - Parise too - it was going to be used as leverage.

Now if Minny is found to have bid against themselves, ala the case of Jim Hendry for Soriano, to the tune of $46M more than anyone else, then that's another story.

The price is whatever someone is going to pay. And Minny has 2 guys now until the cows come home at $7.5M AAV. Have fun. On the 'Hawks side with Doan, if they want him, go hard after it. Otherwise just drop out, make a trade for a 2C like Gagner, Plekanec or Krejci. Sign some UFA's like Clark, Hannan and Winnik and let's get the season going.

I can go with that too....but I need more than Brookbank... now he and Winnik and some top 6 grit then I won't think a bus load of Jerry's kids would make a better GM....but until he does more than sign old phucks and 4liners I won't believe in him

Looking for an intelligent response...guess that's just not your thing... My post was not a complaint, merely a question of improvement and multiple statements of fact. No need to defend JJ, he's a big boy and capable of responding on his own. If he didn't want the attention, he wouldn't post here.
- sockersfc5

Intelligent response? Jesus, I guess it must be your time of the month? Next time I'll suggest croqueting. Maybe that will tickle your fancy?

Hey, when you want to start talking some hockey, I'll give you some respect.

Really...7.5M a year....for 4 years...

Did anyone see anything in the owners proposal about eliminating the salary cap?

If Doan is "worth" 7.5 M a year, what will Toews be worth when his deal expires?

- ArlingtonRob

I don't know if it's really true, do you? Does anyone. I did premise this with, "it's from Ek". But the price is the price.

Only big market owners would want to elminate the cap. NHL is not much different than the other leagues. It's big market owners vs small market owners in their own internal fight. MLB has been like that for decades.

So let's take your hypothetical. Doan = $7.5M now... Toews in 3 years, cap/inflation adjusted, will get IMO only, >$10M. I think the day of these lifetime deals will go away unless the range of yearly salary varies by $1M or less. Not like Hossa's max = $7.9M and min = $1.0M.

My guess on Doan is it's PHX at something of a discount or a select group of other teams (e.g. chance to win SOON), highest bidder wins.

...the pot. Really now. It's almost gone to the point of aggravation. The day after the 1st round of the draft there were folks here already getting antsy. My thought then was give it 10-14 days, 'til Independence Day. Well we're another week-and-a-half after that ... and ... crickets.

Jaeckel, almost everything you've put out over the last month and a half has been speculation driven from public press conferences and or inferences made towards possible trades and moves that can be easily rumored by anyone - a source this and a source that... In the wake of all of the inactivity from the Blackhawks, I'd simply ask you to reconsider your sources and the strength of what you are getting. It's not hard for the in-tune Hawk fan to give most of what you have to us. I appreciate your work but would ask you to validate your content or write when there is actual news, not just to post a blog daily here or to promote the radio show.

Owners need unions for one important thing: so they can carry out monopolistic practices through collective bargaining without running afoul of anti-trust laws - salary caps, territorial rights, the draft (saying where a player must play), franchise control - as all (or most) of these things wind up being subject to collective bargaining, the courts stay away.

Players are free to pursue other lines of work and owners free to invest their capital in other ventures. These are free people free to enter into contractual relationships for their talents and services.

To split hairs, pro sports is entertainment...not a sport. As true old fashioned sports fans like most of us are, it is something that many of us fail to grasp. This changed late 80s early 90s in most sports. Its when Old Commiskey went bye bye...along with a dozen other coliseum type parks.

Owners need the kind of players you refer to, if they want to be able to charge 100 per seat, they still could find quality hockey players...people who know the game well and play it well. You could pay them 40 to 50 k a season and charge fans 10 bucks a seat...or something like that.

I know I am all over the place, but someone said it best when looking at pro sports owners and unions/players...IT is millionaires fighting with billionaires.
