Maybe the Sabres realized that they weren't going to land Staal, Ryan, Nash or Getzlaf and offered Doan that kind of money?

True, my thoughts were the guy might not even play all 4 years. However, you have to go to Cap Geek and look at the better teams and players. Detroit, Pitt, St. Louis, Vancouver. Look at what thier stars make, what the results have been and how under control thier cap situation is. And then think about 37 year old Doan. Would this be just another spend money for the Sake of spending it? I know Terry is filthy rich but there has to be a line drawn somewhere right?

We are in a tough spot,
IMO, Darcy has built a really strong future for this team
(which is why u aren't seeing McNabb, Pysyk, Armia, etc traded)...
But we are also in "win now" mode

Kinda puts us in "no mans land" as far as the direction of the franchise for the next 2 years

Three options IMO....
1) hope the kids grow up fast & can take on big roles
2) trade a bunch of the stockpiled talent for a couple (3, maybe) pieces to give us a shot to contend right away
3) trade vanek, pominville & miller... Get some stud prospects & high picks... Total rebuild ala NYI, EDM, PIT, etc
