What would be top dollar you would spend on doan? I said 6 million per year for 3 years..

The higher the price the shorter the term should be imo

3rd line checking center and voice of experience I guess? We could do worse iMO.

The reason I asked what role people expected of him is because that is no longer Arnott's style of play. If we wanted to put him as a checking line or shut down line center, we are better to go with one of our younger guys or look elsewhere.

Arnott primarily played the 3rd line last year, but it was often against other teams bottom 6 players. He was used on the powerplay a lot averaging about 2.5min/60 where he got 40% of his points. He didnt face the toughest competition and only saw about 11 min per game.

He only had 24 hits last year through 72 games. Not something you look for out of your checking line center.

While he would bring veteran presence and has won a cup, hes not a shut down or checking line guy.

LOL me too.

I don't care if it was the Sabres! It is not our money, and maybe the cap hit is around 5.5 and a huge bonus. I don't know 7.5 cap hit would be tough to take, but it is Shane Freaking Doan. We need this guy. I dont think anyone can argue that.

Last night at the Blue V Gold game, Girgensons in my opinion was the best prospect out there. By prospect I don't mean NHLers, I thought Armia was not too impressive, Grigerenko was good but I would have liked more chances for him. But I think Girgensons could make this team out of any of the kids. Armia needs a couple years.

SIGN DOAN!

Yeah. Exactly. He's Shane Doan and he deserves nowhere near this amount whether it was five years ago or today. He'd be nice, but not at this gross overpayment.

Good point, but St. Louis also has Backes and Steen to play against those top lines. We are severely short at Center (or at least we have a lot of open-ended potential there) and it's possible Arnott could bring enough flexibility to play in a number of spots through the lineup should Ennis or Hodgson struggle.

I definitely agree it wouldn't make our season to get him but I'll stick by my qualified "we could do worse" praise of the option.

OK, well when another team over pays him like every free agent that becomes available, lets not complain how the Sabres don't make a splash or do whatever it takes to get the guy they want.

Trust me, I don't think anyone on this board thinks Doan is worth 7.5 million a year at 35. Also we don't know how that 30 million is being paid out, maybe it is a huge signing bonus.

The Sabres also do not have a player like Doan or have had a player like him with all of his intangibles in a long time. But, we can sit here at status quo and let him sign somewhere else for huge money and the Sabres can be left without that type of player.

There's overpaying, and then there's overpaying. I'm curious to see how you think his cap hit will be small because of a large signing bonus. On a 4yr deal you can't really diminish a huge cap hit like you can a deal like Erhoff. Not sure if you realize this or not?

And yes, I'll take the status quo if that means we don't sign another 7mil player who is not a superstar. That would make two on our roster already...

Also, not advocating the status quo but I'd rather go after a Ryan who can contribute to the team for a long time. Also consider this. Are we a Doan away from the cup? I don't think so.
