the preds can now only trade his rights to the flyers. if the do match, the preds will have to wait a year and then they can trade him to whoever they see fit. But i doibt any team will be willing take take on a 13 million dollar signing bouns. - tomburton99
this is one nasty contract
I don't think I could have imagined a more nasty contract than this contract |

I think the Flyers should be forced to fold.
And, Holmgren sentenced to a room where he is stuck with Sestito trying to pull his buzzed hair constantly for 10 years. - jimbro83
I don't remember the terms of the Kovalchuk contract. Did they give him low salary with an outrageous signing bonus every year? From what I remember it was just a high yearly salary at the beginning and low salary at the end. Obviously that's how Holmgren is trying to avoid the circumvention by having a low yearly salary and tacking on a huge signing bonus every year.
But clearly, they are trying to circumvent the cap in a new way. It's comical that Snider is a proponent in rolling back player's salaries. |

if he wins a couple of norris trophies then it gets better. if he ends up like luongo the flyers are screwed. |

I thought there was an unwritten rule against offer sheets. seems like other GM's will get pissed with holmgren. I don't know what the new CBA will hold but I hope some team with lots if cap room sends a ridiculous offer sheet to Giroux next season and screw Holmgren over. Karma, Paulie!!!!!! |

i think the reason wh ythe kovi deal was nixed was because he was being baid 500k for like the last 4 years of his deal. He would have gotten 500k from age 39-43. |

I think the orginal for Kovalchuk that was blocked was actually 6 years at the end of deal for 500K.
it was comical |

I saw your Flyers should fold comment, hahaha. Cheers to that and shame on them for poaching like they just did.
Holmgren is probably the scummiest GM in the league. |

Well this deal is pretty comical too. It definitely violates the "spirit" of the CBA.
Wow, I don't understand how these owners can look at the players union and try to convince them of salary rollbacks. All they try to do is get around the rules of the cap. It's unreal. |

There is an unwritten rule about offer sheets; they are seldom exercised and rarely ever not matched.
Talk around the campfire is that the Flyers did this to block other rival teams from potentially getting him; when I say other rival teams potentially getting him I mean the Rangers.

the biggest culprits since the lockout to sign players to offer sheets are the oilers and flyers. |

It's so funny how the Metro area teams worry so much about the Rangers. Flyers take over the lead from the Devils. |

Dustin Penner getting that offer sheet from the Oilers pissed off the Ducks pretty good. Holmgren will be in the same boat with or without Weber. |

I hav a hard time not seeing Nashville match and I wonder if part of the reason Weber did this was to force the issue with the Preds with the hope/expectation they would match. He seems to be a standup guy. If he had concluded after Suter left that he also wanted to move on I would have expected him to be up front with Poile and to allow Nashville to try to move him and recoup value for him. Or if he wanted to choose his next destination he could have waited until he was an UFA. Unless of course he was prompted by the inital CBA offer from the league and is afraid he would not be able to cash in like this next year (a great likelihood actually). Why force the issue right now at this moment? Did he get that impatient or is this his way of getting a deal done with Nashville?
I also wonder if the pressure on Slats to make a deal for Ryan or Nash increases should Nashville not match. Weber is by far the biggest acquisition in the division so far and I wonder if the Rangers and Penguins might be pressed to add a big scoring forward to offset this move. I'm really kind of bummed we hadn't worked out a deal with Nashville to be truthful. |

The Kesler offer sheet was couch cushion money compared to this though. I do see your point though. |

It would have cost too much to acquire Weber in a trade.
The Flyers, despite potentially bringing in the best defenseman in the league, still have an awful situation in net.

I'm going to take a look at the long-term cap implications too. A lot of money in Bryz and Weber should he end up in Philly.
Never said it wouldn't have cost a bunch to get him but I would have loved Weber on this team. |

plus if the do sign weber and the cap stays the same they would be at 70.2 million on the dot. they are gonna be in tough spot when giroux, schenn and couturier need new deals. |

The Flyers will completely ruin their team for years to come. Did you see the breakdown of this deal? 26 million for the first year, 14 million per for the next four seasons?
