Eskin is a very reputable journalist.
- LordStanley88

Yeah, his reputation is that he knows zero about sports.

Why quote such an a-hole?

If Eskin reported that, there is a 0% chance of a comeback.

The next clue Eskin finds would be his first.

Yep. Except that Eskins injury reports during the playoffs have been generally 100% accurate, and that he also reported that the Flyers were shopping both Carter and Richards last summer, and that they were going to move JvR this summer.

Outside of that, he's been way off.

Pronger's concussion issue is really scary, and I agree with many people that its wishful thinking at minimum that he ever plays again, and a miracle at worse. I don't think anyone knows if age or conditioning has anything to do with P.C.S. (the fact that the medical community has little more than theories on concussions anyway is scarier).

I would hope Homer has decided to continue on as if Pronger will never play again, and if by some chance he can return its like a trade deadline deal or FA signing.

They have sent guys to the AHL, sure, but LTIR is really only used when a team knows it's going to be over the cap and has no other recourse.

From Capgeek's FAQ:

Teams receive cap relief when a player is considered to have a "bona-fide long-term injury" — injuries that cause a player to miss at least 10 games or 24 days. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of the CBA.

Just because a player is on LTIR does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. In the event a player is placed on LTIR, his cap hit still counts toward the team's overall cap payroll. Relief only comes if replacing the player's salary pushes the team's cap payroll to date over the cap. The amount of relief is limited to the amount the team has gone over the cap (less the amount of payroll room the team had at the time the LTIR transaction took place), not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

There is no formal designation of "replacement players."

Basically that's saying that LTIR can't even be used unless the team is actually going to be over the cap after a particular move.

- Jsaquella

A player can be placed on the LTIR list even if the team is well under the Cap. The exemption just doesn't kick in until the team uses all of it's available cap space, incuding the player on LTIR's cap hit.

Stop defending this guy. Do you think he could name 5 players on any other NHL team outside of the Flyers?

It was, but the guy has been pretty much correct over the past few years. I don't particularly like him, but I'll give credit where it's due. Other reporters heard the rumblings on Carter and Richards, Eskin had the stones to report them.

Knowing a sport is far different from having access to sources in the sport that will leak you valid information.

For instance, I'm sure that the injury news comes from Eskin's work with the Eagles broadcasts, because the Flyers and Eagles use a lot of the same doctors.

The bottom line is, regardless of his knowledge of the sport, Eskin has sources and gets news.

I did mis-type. I meant the LTIR cap exemption, not actual LTIR. I'm just assuming they will hold off on LTIR until it becomes necessary, since there's no benefit unless they need the cap room.

Maybe Eskin and Ek are the same. Phonetically, very close.

Plus, they are both fountains of information. Go-sh darn Nostradamus x 2.

The fact remains that Eskin's reports on Pronger's wrist and Carter's knee in the 2011 playoffs were 100% accurate. He reported the Flyers were shopping both Carter and Richards before any other reporter in Philly and both were traded. He reported that JvR likely would have been traded during last season had he been healthy and that he was likely to be traded this summer.

Brian Burke confirmed that JvR for Schenn discussions were tabled last season due to JvR's injuries and what happened to JvR this summer?

So again, regardless of Eskin's lack of knowledge in the sport, the guy does get information that turns out to be correct quite often. Name calling doesn't change the fact.

I will say this about the guy; he's not afraid to give info if he knows its 100% fact, even if it might ruffle some feathers with management. A good reporter does that, instead of toeing the company line to ensure their position as a beat writer.

I'd bet on St. Louis there.

Bernier to the Oilers makes too much sense too.
