I am a bit shocked by the group saying that the comments were blow out of proportion. That's simply wrong. Look at the work the Burke's have done in an effort to curb homophobia out of the game of hockey. You can even look at guys like Sean Avery and even Brent Sopel, who took time out of their personal lives to essentially welcome the gay community to the hockey world without judgement or hate. What they've done is quite remarkable in sports, and the You Can Play project has been working so hard to rid the game of the attitudes and hate Cam Janssen professed in his interview with these goons.

It's really disappointing to hear, and it's even worse to hear it being downplayed or played off as 'overreaction.'

If you spend any time in the NJ boards, that is their reaction to most things.

Frankly, not very surprising.

I do agree with your post.

Yep, this kind of hate speech continues to exist as long as people don't react strongly to it, and it will certainly affect younger generations. Removing something from accepted public discourse is a step toward removing it from private thought too.

if your going to write a whole article about what he said on a internet radio show (which probably 10 or less people were listening to) that even this st. Louis local didnt know exhisted, you should probably point out that when cam was on 101 espn radio (an actual RADIO station) he pretty much said the same things, with no language, AND went on saying how you don't ever want to take guys out or go head hunting because he understood how long and serious concussions are and that you never want to hurt someone.......but yeah lets not mention any of that because it was the right thing to say and your article wouldnt be as "juicy"....lets just leave all that out so we can get some hits on the ole' blog.....

if anyone really cares enough to here a real radio interview with him, its probably on 101.1 espn's stl page or stltoday.com

..........and im not even a big fan of his

Not so much an overreaction, that was the wrong weird. I just highly doubt he truly meant what he said. He was wrong to say what he did no doubt, but if you actually watch the interview, you would realize if the radio host inserted any remark besides a gay joke in their he would've said the same thing. In a way, he set himself up for failure by going on this talk show, which was pretty much going to be edgy and at times crossing the politically correct line. I agree on paper the words seem a bit stronger than if you actually watch the interview. Again, not condoning what he did, but at the same time, it looks a lot worse then it seems.

Zippy, honestly, who puts any credit into the dialog of a hockey player? I could care less what comes out their mouth, what they do on the ice is what matters, too much thought and media attention over the thoughts or remarks of a hockey player is a waste of time. Not like he is political figure or someone influential. Move along people, the next retard is in the shadows.

It doesn't matter if he believes what he said because he said it. Also, you might think it isn't a problem but the fact that he feels he can be homophobic and is comfortable with it a big deal. Some people call tolerance being overly sensitive but I bet they live in the majority. Marginalization of people is wrong and Janssen marginalized a lot of people today.

Wow it's crazy, he actually sounds like a real person. It's as if he has thoughts of his own as opposed to every other player that sounds like they're reading a script. Isn't it just awful that he has a mind of his own and takes pride in what he does? We all know that's how many players feel, at least he's real about it.

While he might think being a loud mouthed homophobe and misogynist is a matter of pride, others shouldn't applaud him for it.

True, the homophobic part is ignorant. I was speaking more about him going after other teams. All the talk in the NHL about oh should fighting be gone and this and that. Or "In the heat of the game it's understandable tempers will flare" is bullpoop. What they want to say is after the other team talks crap, I'm out there looking to knock heads. That's what I like. The homophobic part again is wrong and ignorant. And I don't support that. I do, however, support him being up front with his feelings (and while his language was ill advised, I don;t truly believe he is homophobic. At one point or another we've all used terms such as "gay" or worse in a way we shouldn't have.) That doesn't make it ok, but until he comes out and says he hates that community, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

What a moron. Hes screwed himself and made his team look bad. Players like him are so unneeded and are easily replaced. Id be surprised if he played another game of pro hockey. just because hes à goon on the ice does not mean he has to be a retard off the ice. Get some class buddy.

Big talk for a guy who never laced up.

What does he do "hey! When I get down from this press box I'm gonna get you!!"

Please, he would have gotten rocked.

These comments don't concern me. We threw words around like that in the 80s and none of us were out headhunting and picking on any gay person; in our community, that gay person would have joined right in on the comments (think Gran Turino). There's a difference between coming from the wit and coming from the heart.

But is Janssen witty? No, because you also don't say those things publicly in a society that is pinwiener sensitive to comments like that and misconstrues them to be more than they really are. This especially while playing for an organization that will boot you to the curb if you are a socially malignant to that club.

He put on a uniform for that interview to fit in with those guys, but needless to say, he's unlikely to be putting on a Devils uniform again.

Edit: I did not say pinwiener but you know, the filters. They can't tell the context in which you're using words.

Cam definitely made some boneheaded comments. But where does he say he hates gays? I really think this was just a bad joke by him and the interviewer. Wouldn't be shocked if hes gone before the season starts now. I'm sure someone will show Lou this.

Christ the world is to politically correct these days. Have you guys ever played a game of hockey? That's all people do is chirp eachother about anything they think will take a person off their game no matter what it is

Haha devils fans tore Avery apart for saying sloppy seconds .... This guy called out gays, said he likes to hurt players , hit them in the head , and that's ok..... Take the blinders off this dude is a clown the only thing irrelevant is him he's a healthy scratch 9.9/10th of the season he's a joke worthless and deserves to be in the ahl for the rest of his career
- volcom955

Hey I'm with you. Janssen and Avery are cut from the same cloth even if Avery could net a little more than 0 goals a year,

haha, well Cam is representing the team here so he is held to a higher standard. Maybe the homophobic comments in the locker room are why Parise left

Jeff Quirin: Cam Janssen Just Being Cam Janssen
So Cam Janssen said some bad things. Yeah, he shouldn't have, but what did you expect?

- Jeff Quirin

SERIOUSLY??? This is such a huge deal ? wow the NHL grows softer and softer each day. I probably wont even be watching it anymore after this upcoming season if this is the direction we are heading if you don't like fights in hockey dont watch it , if you dont like what some players who play in the nhl say then dont watch it quit making it all about feelings its bullpoop this is exactly why the ufc is fastly becoming the biggest sport in the world because their athletes arent filtered and critised about what they say because its ENTERTAINING chael sonnin just ripped all of brazil and did the brazillians stop watching or caring no

Like everyone said he barely plays he isnt the face of the franchise nor the face of the nhl why does anyone care what he has to say let alone put any stock into it now i would agree a little more if it was sidney crosby who said all this then yes it might be damaging but seriously who cares what cam janssen has to say about anything i dont and im not sticking up for him specifically either i just think its stupid that this is a big deal, Cant wait for them to put visors on every player, take out fighting and body checking and make it manditory for everyone of the players to wear bubble wrap and go to church on sundays

Oh shut up. The problem is the misogynist and homophobic comments he made. The other comments about him trying to hurt people are bad but not as stupid.
