Voracek has a very good shot. That's why the Flyers want him to shoot the puck more.

I think this is a little mis-leading. This is after his concky, Jagr was battling injuries, and teams were starting to zero in on this line's "patterns". Giroux is an above average defensive player when he trys to be. Problem is the team counted on him for offense so that is what he focused on IMO.
- RooNosHockey

Giroux is a good penalty killer, but his ES defensive play is below average. And needs to improve in that area.

I don't mind that they didn't get anyone big this summer. I'm slightly upset they let the Parise/Suter situation get in the way of making other moves. They could probally have had Ryan at a cheaper price before Parise signed. They could have also resigned Carle for cheaper and shorter then Tampa gave him since he wanted to come back to Philly. And IMO they should have resigned Jagr. He earned the ice time he was asking for last year. If his production would ahve dropped then you address it with him then. Either say we have to drop you down a line, or we could trade you to a team that would put you on thier top line, but with the way Giroux and Hartnell gelled with him, I'm nervous to break that up.
- RooNosHockey

Parise signing has zero to do with the cost of Ryan in a trade. And if the Flyers could have signed Carle cheaper for what he got in Tampa, he'd still be a Flyer. Jagr wanted what the Flyers couldn't promise him or pay him.

I disagree.. the Flyers obviously preferred Suter to Carle... They waited and waited letting Carle know where they stood.. If they had ignored Suter and signed Carle as soon as they had tagging space they likely would have had a decent deal.

Size has nothing to do with defense. When a guy lacks size they use speed to make up for it. Dont get on the boards with bigger guys, get there before them and move the puck. Also positional play has nothing to do with size.

Giroux will most likey not be going against the other teams top line. He will most likely be going up against the other teams best checking line. What Giroux lacks in size he can make up for in speed, and using his ice vision to avoid getting hit. I just dont buy Giroux's size as being a hinderence.

- RooNosHockey

Size has a lot to do with playing defense. It's not reality for a smaller player to get to the puck before and then move. And a bigger stronger player has an advantage in puck battles. Home teams have the last change, and the Flyers frequently go head to head in top line matchups.

I disagree. Carle was also waiting for Suter to sign, to see what the market was. The Flyers likely were offered the opportunity to match. If Carle was going to sign cheaper with the Flyers, it would have happened.

He does go to the dangerous areas. I'll include the link to the Volchenkov hit in the post (dont know how to embed). But this type of avoidable dangerous hit where he is on the receiving end happened a little too much IMO. I think he'll learn to live to fight another day (esp. with Volchenkov on the ice) in situations like these and put on the brakes on these occassions. Doesn't mean that he's a soft player, but it will strengthen the argument that he's a smarter player.

On a side note I would be totally ok with Schenn turning into Jason Spezza

- Just5

Don't need the link to the hit. I don't want him putting on the brakes. I want him going hard to the puck. If he starts putting on the brakes and not going hard on the pcuk, whatch how his icetime diminishes and his effectiveness as a player goes with it. Spezza is a very soft, and overrated player. I sure hope Schenn becomes so much more then that.

I agree. The Flyers didnt want to commit to that 6 year 5.5M cap hit.

For an undersized guy, Giroux is actually a very competent and conscientious defensive player at 5v5, forcing a lot of turnovers with his tenacity and positioning.

The only real complaint about him 5v5 is that he's so confident with the puck and his ability to make plays that sometimes he can be guilty of being a bit casual and committing unforced turnovers.

Other than that, though, I'd say he did pretty well defensively this past season considering that neither of his linemates were defensive stalwarts -- Hartnell's not the most detail-oriented defensive player, relying more on effort than anything, and we all know that Jagr only plays as much defense as is necessary to keep himself out of the coach's ire.

At least try to limit his "hard" minutes, like on the penalty kill.

Just let Kimmo take all the penalties this season and rest in the box.

Any chance the Flyers give Matt Walker another chance to make the club? Last summer Homer was talking about how good he looked.
