Edit: By the way, that proposed Montreal trade is absolutely atrocious. Nowhere even remotely near realistic. More like Plekanec, Subban, and Montreal's 2013 1st for just Weber. - SteveTambellini
I would honestly rather have the cap space vacated by Weber leaving than pull the trigger on that trade.
If you expect even modest return for Subban, we're talking about a situation like this:
Pittsburgh trades Neal for Plekanecs and a 2nd, then trades Plekanecs, who would become Pittsburgh's best player for the moment, and Letang for Subban.

sure, the Coyotes leaving would be sad for the fans in Phoenix (both of them), but if you can't support a team, you shouldn't get to keep a team. The NHL is a business, and successful businesses are seldom built on good intentions and pixie dust. Play me a sad tune after it's over, Ek, but it's time for this team to hit the ol' dusty trail. - tryan83

I don't know what's sillier: that, or the bit where he said that Plekanec would become Pittsburgh's best player. |

Well, I mean, they just got Sutter, it would seem like a Philadelphia kind of thing to do if they shipped him off without at least printing how badly he failed expectations before packaging him for the fabled offensive defenseman. The package would indeed have to include Habs roster players that they trade back to Montreal to balance things out. |

I keep seeing Paajarvi's name creep into discussions. I don't think Edmonton will do anything with their forwards until one of them doesn't fit into what should be a very scary top nine. It seems like they have two or three decent D prospects, but I would be in agony if my team could still have 2 great lines and not have anything close to a #1 D pair. |

"I am always in favor of hockey fans NOT losing their team" - Eklund
Tell me, what would be the best for MOST hockey fans? The Yotes staying in Phoenix or the Yotes moving to Quebec city? Makes no sense to me.

By the way, who would say "I'm in favor of hockey fans losing their team"...Geez... - Habs25
Frankly I think the best thing would be to contract 2 tams and realign the conferences in a way that facilitates reasonable travel within certain time zones. Teams would generally have a few more above-average players after a couple of entry drafts as well. |

Agreed. In this case, fans not losing their team means that another fan base - one that would certainly be larger and more fervent - can't get a team.
(Fairly certain that when Spock said that "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few," this is exactly what he was thinking about.) |

I'm sure the league would be more robust both financially and talent-wise if even more teams - say, 4-6 - were contracted. Unfortunately, it won't happen. |

There is already more than enough teams, there is already a handful of teams failing in brutal markets like Arizona adding more teams wouldn't make any sense.
The conferences and divisions need to be revamped and some teams need to be moved, but we def dont need more teams. |

4-6 is really saying to what otherwise should be a mildly interested US audience "we're really in trouble, continue to think of us as unstable and niche". I think two would be great, especially since they submitted that bizarre uneven conference proposal. Phoenix would be "team a". The other team contracted could be any number of teams which don;t have a string market foothold. |

Contracting in English I think is "to shrink; shorten". |

Soooo a pt. per game player/40 goal scorer, plus a 2-time All-star and a player with 42 pts in 51 games for a player who's never scored over 40 points in a season, +a draft pick… FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RAY SHERO PICK UP THE PHONE! - jonnemo8771

This whole thing may be a HUGE mistake both ways.
It has been reported that due to the July 4th long weekend, an extra week was added to the deadline.... now the 16th.

New Jersey is on the Bubble.
Dallas has new Canadian owners who would like to move north.
Colorado and St Louis were both rumoured to be in the tank... but new ownesr in St Louis so we will wait and see.
They are turning into a pyramid scheme. |

I'm guessing they're trying to find any way to keep that off the ballot, because they know it will get blown out in the election. The people who try and raise taxes in this country are too lazy to explain the benefits of whatever it is they're trying to do...and Americans are at the point where if they put "we need to raise taxes by a penny a year or you will die" on the ballot, it would still lose....because they've been convinced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh that no taxes are any good, ever, no matter what.....and then they wonder why they have to drive through potholes... |

Right. Because subverting democracy is great if it means keeping a team that taxpayers don't want to pay for. This whole situation stinks. |
