Hey Clouts... may I suggest a Eberle >>> Kessel blog... use the TSN poll as evidence.

It'll really spice things up around here.

So Doan to Edm is dead.

"TFP has learned that Doan is only willing to leave Phoenix if he's to sign with a Stanley Cup contender and has already told several teams he is not interested in joining their respective squad."

Figure he has already declined Edm.

I hope Dallas is willing to part with Brandon Morrow at a good price. GO GET this guy. Though it would certainly make it tough for guys like PRV to get a sniff.

He's not untouchable, but this is a silly statement. That's just terrible asset management. Look at how long Phoenix held on to Turris, and what they got for him.

Now consider this list:
Patrick Sharp first 337 NHL games - 179 points
Henrik Sedin first 400 games- 221 points
Daniel Sedin first 397 games - 222 points
Stephen Weiss first 401 games- 224 points
Sam Gagner first 366 games - 220 points

Heck, he's not even that far off the pace that Kessel put up in his first 370 or so (245 points).

The fact that leafs fans seem ready to give up a 22 year old for nothing explains a lot.

- Morris

OK, let's build up Gagner to be in t he same group as Sharp, and the Sedins.

I just don't understand the 'bag of pucks' notion. If we're giving up on a guy that's 9 months older than Eberle, and has put up 220 points in the NHL, we might as well be giving up on Yakupov if he doesn't net 50 points this year. It's nonsensical.
- Morris

Well ya - he's under valued. period. I think it really comes down to his size sometimes but I firmly believe he will continue to get better and better. I see some 60+ point years for Gagner as he approaches his mid to late twenties.

He crests at 39th for centers in scoring. +5 last year is a nice litte stat.

He's tenacious - he has jam and as he gets older and stronger he'll be a lot harder to knock off the puck which of course seems to be his most glaring weakness; he's just not that hard to play against and the Oilers are going to need more then that I think.

A couple conflicting statements. It's nice that Oil fans have a little loyalty to their own homegrown players, the league does lack that. BUT if you have to wait till he's 29 or so to wait for him to develop, is it really worth it? And there is a huge difference in the "bag of pucks" Gagner and Yakupov. Yakupov went #1 overall, elite talent, Gagner was a 1st round pick. Not all 1st round picks are elite, very few after the first couple of picks in each draft, and the odd aberration of nature like Weber, Zetterberg, etc. Gagner is overrated by Oil fans, maybe under appreciated by the rest of the league, but still, worth very little in trade. His level of production has decreased every year since his rookie year, he is a dime a dozen. Let's have a look at some other players with around the same game / point production:

Brian Little : 356 games, 195 points - another disappointment
David Booth: 365 games, 196 points - did ok in Florida I suppose
Nicklas backstrom, 365 games, 367 points..... wow
Steven Stamkos: 325 games, 329 points.... yikes no wonder he went #1 overall
Tobias Enstrom: 380 games, 204 points, pretty good for a Dman
David Krejci: 377 games, 277 points .. very good development
Tomas Fleischmann: 387 games, 220 points, he's been thrown under the bus
Patrick Kane: 399 games, 369 points .....
Drew Stafford: 397 games, 246 points... hot and cold
Keith Yandle: 365 games, 187 points... wow awesome for a young Dman
Clarke MacCarthur: 363 games, 193 points.... a point for Gagner
Jonathan Toews: 363 games, 324 points.... and still growing
Blake Wheeler: 324 games, 191 points.

The point being, Gagner is nowhere near anything but normal. Loyalty aside, he can be easily replaced by numerous other players around the league, and when it comes to trade value (as was the original point of all this) he doesn't have much, because his play has been average. One bucket of used pucks. Honestly he has better value staying with the Oil. I was just pointing out his trade value will not get Yandle as Richard was trying to allude to in his blog.

I don't really get the flotsam of player comparisons there but fair points made.
He is under appreciated by other fan bases, at least here on HB and trust me - as you can imagine - there is a solid contingent of detractor Oiler fans as well.

I agree. At this point, his overall game is at the clip of an average second line center - "normal". Sure. The fact that he is still so young is important and may flash a little shinier to a specific GM at a specific time.

It's easy to say Gagner +++ can get you Yandle or Gagner as the main center piece cannot. We can only assume and speculate as to whether there are quality/ quality deals to be had or quantity / quality deals or the shades in between. Then include the mitigating factors of team needs, the cap, the floor et cetera.

Having said all that, a lot would have to go right for the Oilers to pull it off for sure. Yandle is a top 20 D-man.

Thanks for the response. I don't think I ever argued anything other than the fact that Gagner is average. My point is that if you ship out young players who have performed fairly well for a bag of pucks, you run the risk of shipping out Sharp, the Sedins, or Stephen Weiss, who all put up Gagner-like numbers the first 350 games of their career.

I'd never say Gagner is destined to become those guys, but it's really stupid to think about any guy that isn't amazing as worth a bag of pucks. Normal is fine, for a lot of players playing a lot of roles on a lot of teams.

You understand that all oilers fans =/= Cloutier right, and when he mentions Gagner for Yandle, we don't necessarily agree with it? Also, is there not a huge difference between "able to acquire Yande" and "worth a bag of pucks"? As you said, he's pretty average.
