10% is still peanuts considering what he was making.. I thought he'd be looking for more.. That's surprising to me

I don't think he's wrong in this case though. We have way too many wingers as it is. Unless Burke first ships out some wingers to upgrade the centre position bringing in another winger doesn't really help, we'd have: Kessel, Lupul, JVR (unless he pans out at centre), Kulemin, Mac, Brown plus possibly guys like Frattin, Kadri and other rookies (Komarov, D'Amigo, etc.).

Plus, why the hell would Doan come here? He probably wants a shot at the Cup and he won't get it here, makes no sense for him to come play for us.

- deerow84

You don't do that until you overfill the other position. You can't deplete one area and then try to fill it. You overfill a position then use that depth.

Plus since he said we don't need him, and we need size,, grit, leadership he's wrong. 100%.

Bautista's done. No way he's clocking that many homers. Fielder's a man on a mission.

He did.... he was top 4 in preseason. He earned it.

His advanced stats tell a nice picture.

The thing that kept franson out of the lineup was some kid named Gardiner came in and stole the spot that he was pencilled in for

This is why I have an issue with the depth Burke has built. I agree with competition but Franson sitting was a disgrace last year. What's going to happen this year if Holzer is great in training camp and Franson plays fine? Somebody is going to be sitting for no reason. It's just dumb and makes good players sit. A guy like Matt Lashoff as your 7th dman, that is fine for depth. But Franson as your 7th dman, thats just stupid.

Uh, he makes less than Horcoff and 100K more than Pomenville. He makes the same as Getzlaf and Perry but they're due for (massive) raises. For what he does (consistently scores 30 goals, like Ovy, Nash, Iginla do), he's a bargain.
- gravyface

I agree somewhat but the contract as a whole was a good one for Kessel and positioned him in the driver seat at its conclusion.

It was a 5 year deal at age 20-21. The cap hit is $5,400,000 for the next two years. He was paid $6m last year. At the end of 13-14 he is a UFA. He was given a NTC in his final year. That was a good deal. The kind of deal you give a star.

I love Doan as much as the next guy, but unless you can ship out Lombardi, Connolly, & one of Kulemin & MacArthur, there just isn't room for him. I would take Doan over all those guys however (except Kulemin). Would be a fantastic leader, but the offers he will see will greatly exceed what Burke would be willing to dish out. It's kind of one of those if he got him, awesome!, but if he doesn't then it's completely understandable.

I'd give DOan a 2 year 4.5, but I think you'll see "retirement" contracts fielded out to him.

Hahah my thoughts exactly, he has good character on the ice and off the ice. Don't really understand why anyone would think otherwise. I would rather him be our captain than Phaneuf

Good for you. Now go wash up. It's going to take awhile to wash off that shame.

Kessel gets paid like a superstar. I'm not a huge fan of Lupul's character but he's an excellent setup man. I think Nash would have complimented the leafs nicely (not thinking of the cost it would take to get him). But if Lu is a salary dump (according to some) then Nash would have to be the same.
I think the leafs need a bonafide canadian star. It's been awhile. Nash fits that role.

- bloatedmosquito

160k Higher cap hit then Dennis Widman is NOT being paid like a superstar.

Well its a little too early to go crazy about Lupul. If he keeps it up then yes, I would prefer him as captain but this isn't worth discussing. The Phaneuf captain situation comes up a lot, he is clearly going to remain the Leafs captain for a solid amount of years. I don't have a problem with him being our captain right now.

I'm personally talking about the 7mill + guys when I'm talking upper echelon.. Kessel has to prove himself more in the next couple years before I say he's deserving of that kind of dough

As Burn said a guy named Gardiner stole his minutes. Also that was Wilson's decision, not Burke's, to sit Franson.

Where Burke does like to have 7 D, I agree with your assessment that a guy like Lashoff as your 7th is a better idea.

No big deal. Just a bit of arrogance. Stories, interactions, BS like that. Good hockey player though.
