I'll pass on Luongo. Forget the regular season stats he is a proven choker in the playoffs. No thanks
- Hawksfan8819

If losing in the playoffs means a goalie is a "choker", then the list of choker's is a long one.

Tell me, I collect old black and white pictures of buildings and places that mean something to me. I was never in the old Stadium but always wanted to see a game there. Somebody was kind enough to give me a photo taken inside at the All Star Game. Do you know where in the city would you go to get a black and white of the Stadium taken from the street?

Start searching the web. There will be numerous offerings of ones in the 30's and 40's. Especially a view from the SE corner, looking West on Madison and North on Wood St. The "STADIUM" sign, vertical letters right above Gate 2 is prominent. There are also many offerings on eBay.

You bet. There's only 1 champion a season and I figure only a handful (5 or less) goalies can be mentioned alongside the Cup-winning goalie each season. Some guys just can't produce some years. Others on occassion get lucky and don't ever have to carry their team even in 1 round.

Huge difference though...no hard cap in MLB, obviously is one in NHL. Ergo, that comparison doesn't work.
- TLinden16

My point is the richer of the franchises will in one way or another make concessions or some form of payment to weaker ones in order to have enough teams in a league, an opponent to play. ..Hard cap, soft cap, revenue sharing.

Now if you had said, hey the Islanders are in effect helping keep Phoenix afloat and they are losing money themselves, the system is wrong, I couldn't much argue.

Luigi comes here and guess what?? The hawks will continue with the same goalie roulette thye have for the past 4 years everytime one struggles or they both struggle. No thanks. Crawford has to grab the job this year or back to goalie hunting.

08-09: Khabby and Huet
09-10: Huet and Niemi
10-11: Crawford and Turco
11-12: Crawford and Emery
12-13: Craw and Luigi

There was an interesting piece over at PuckDaddy speculating on contracting the Coyotes, followed by a dispersal draft.
- ArlingtonRob

That would be the last resort...As it is the NHL will probably bite the bullet and keep them in AZ for another season. But the timing now couldn't be worse for the NHL...It is really too late to move anywhere for this season....I would think.

When the 'Hawks home was located at 1800 W. Madison St. 1901. W. Madison St.? Not nearly as such.

As Pat said when he was MC'ing the 42nd NHL AllStar game on 19-Jan-1991 "....to the most exciting hockey arena in the world, Chicago Stadium."

Hello Everyone

Been in Greece the last couple weeks and will be til mid August, but have been entertained daily by all on this thread and I thank you for this. I am following on the beach, but too busy to type back as you all could imagine. Too many hot European women in little bikinis

Luongo,a top 10 goalie is definitely an upgrade over Crawford and I am definitely in favor, even though risky,of going after him if there is not a better option available to us. Hopefully he is a Brodeur type and can play until he is 40. The guy has won on big stages in the past. At least the man has a sense of humor and can laugh at his failures of the past. The contract is a difficult one to swallow for sure but Suter's or Parise's could turn out to be similar or worse . One never knows for sure. I would give up Frolik,Crawford or Montador and Any 2 prospects EXCEPT Saad OR Teravainen. I would not do Hjalmarsson or Leddy because of the risk.

Right, so would Chicago be willing to part with all of that for a goalie that might not be an upgrade on what you have already?
- 1970vintage

Honestly I think it wouldn't be a bad deal at all. Bernier was chosen 11th overall so there's your first. Then you send them a player like Morin or Hayes and a player like Frolik or along those lines. Some people think the Hawks would need to send Saad and McNeil and a first and a player and I just can't see that as the case. Bernier is a highly thought of goalie but is still unproven with only 35 games under his belt.

Not the way the Hawks brass as currently constructed sees this. As Al has been pointing out since the alleged play for Broduer, if the Hawks are willing to pay a goalie 5 mil per they have changed their philosophy.

Hawks think they can win on the cheap in goal.

- Mr Ricochet

Al also seems to think that E. Kane is available and that the hawks only had a passing interest in Marty. That may be but I have read a lot more about the Hawks interest in Marty and the offer they made than I have read about E. Kane being available or wanting out of Win.

Nice work JJ. And thanks for spelling Cory properly!

I think Chicago possesses the trade chips that Gillis covets, the question is, is StanBow willing to play ball? On one hand, I really like what the Canucks could get back from the Hawks, on the other hand, I have this gross feeling that if we did trade Lu to Chicago, it would come back to bite us big time. As in stand on your head to win a playoff series big time

- TLinden16

That's pretty much what would happen.

My preference...

If a substantial price is to be paid for an upgrade in goal, I would want a proven commodity, not a prospect.

If no proven commodity can be had this offseason, then roll with Crawford for the time being and see what might become available during the season...or a year from now.

Al,

Sometimes it felt like the building was shaking too. I remember a game 7 against the North Stars that was probably the loudest that I've heard.

When did the cheering through the National Anthem start by the way? They debate this on the Score every once in a while. I've always said it started in 1985 in game 3 of the conference finals against the Oilers. After the Oilers blew the Hawks out in games 1 and 2 the Canadian press was saying the Hawks didn't even belong in the series and were very critical. I remember the Hawks got a standing O' when they came out and after the Canadian Anthem was played the place exploded. Was that the first time or do you remember it happening before that game?

I thought it started at that 1991 All Star Game, in the middle of the first Persian Gulf war - wasn't it Wayne Messmer?

Right, if that's the case Crawford is the ultimate choke artist. All this talk about Lu "choking" in the playoffs is nonsense. Teams win & teams lose it takes everyone. There are few options out there of which Crawford is not one. Stan either sacks up and pays the price now for a goalie that hasn't sucked for their entire career or another year of the core is wasted.

That's the big debate . I remember going to games in 86-90 and hearing the roar during the anthem. I believe the sparklers were the wrinkle that was added, during the all star game.

Remember the story about Al Melgard, original organist? It was in the 50's IIRC from a story from my Dad, a near riot broke out at a game (who woulda thunk it, eh?). Al laid on a couple of the keyboards and in a deafening blow not only did the crowd simmer down, half the glass on the building's perimeter broke.

For those of you who saw pix, was there or both, know of these black-looking doors across all four building sides, mainly above the fire escapes. Those all were glass originally. Mezz fire escapes were on the the Madison and Warren sides. Bal-1 and Bal-2 fire escapes were on the Wood and Wolcott sides.

Sox? Cool.... Announcer? Not so much. Don't know why, but he's so polarizing to me. Guess the homerism is worse than any other ChiTown announcers.

Division is the Sox to take. It'll almost be a disappointment if they don't win it. DET IMO isn't going to make that big of a comeback. CLE sucks.

Yup, remember when Ballard actually lived there. They used to have those turnstyle type gates to get in and we crashed many a rock concert by rushing the poor ticket takers.

The Aud was something else. Talk about steep climbs, Great arena.

- djd

Ahhhgreeed. Nice joint for a game. In my top-10.

Liked all the original six's famed places. Aud, Saddledome, Checkerdome & Spectrum are the rest of the top 10 for me.
