Dominick Moore?

I think his wife has a serious health issue...

- Al

Dominic Moore wins faceoffs and worst case always seems to garner a 2nd round pick at the deadline if he isn't working out. Morbid I know but at least is the type of player teams look for at the deadline.

Kind of like the Cubs will do if they trade Soriano....They will eat a lot of his salary.
Let's say a team has a player with three years left at $7 mill per...

They could deal him and agree to absorb $4 mill in salary per year...and it doesn't count against the cap.

The smaller mkt teams could get big name players more cheaply and the bigger mkt clubs who take more chances can have a way out if things change.

Yeah, I can see the appeal here, but I think one of the things that the last round of CBA negotiations was trying to accomplish was to restrain foolish "rich" GM's from making these mistakes. Buying a player out and having those dollars counting so heavily against the cap is one example. Perhaps the NHL and PA could come to some agreement on team's sharing the cap hit in some way, like how the re-entry waivers works? Part of a trade agreement could be the willingness of one team to be responsible for a portion of the player salary and cap hit?

So how do you deal with the Cap?

You are Team A right at the Cap max - $70M and have a player making $7M you want to move out and will eat $4M of the deal per year..

I'm Team B right at the Cap floor - I agree to take the player because I'm only paying him $3M a year.

You as Team A are only freeing up $3M of cap space not $7M. That's the way I see it anyway - otherwise teams like the Rangers, Detroit, Philly and Toronto really abuse it.

Prior to 2010.. Big Hoss was the same thing.. Ask DET/PITT about him the year we signed him, fans thought he was a choke artist

Take your personal emotional feelings out of it.. Is he better than CC.. yes, Does he make the Hawks Better.. Yes

I want the kid from LA, but the likely-hood of that is up there with CC being a Stanley Cup caliber Goalie.

I don't know man Hossa is a future HOF'er...Luongo...not so much

Aside from the trade for Gagner, look at past posts I have made. I have been calling for those 3: Winnik, hannan, and Moore.

JJ can you enlighten us what Stan is waiting for? Is this the calm before the storm? Wait for Doan, if he doesn't sign pursue other options?

- ikeane

I was surprised to see Hannan still averaging 20 minutes a game, that could definitely be a good addition if the price was right.

Hossa came here, and lost the label of choke artist in the playoffs.. Luongo, change of scenery, might do him some good.. If someone has better more realistic options.. please let me know.

If he could have afforded to pay the Maple Leafs many millions of dollars.

I assume he could have then - don't know about now....

Van, as Stiengrabber of the Yankees found out way back when you need an opponent. If you have to subsidize him so you can win trophies and make a profit, you do so.

Unless you take the NFL model of profit sharing this is what you have.

- Mr Ricochet

Huge difference though...no hard cap in MLB, obviously is one in NHL. Ergo, that comparison doesn't work.

I like the luxury tax too . In baseball you have about 10 teams year after year that are in the running. Bettman loves the parody. I think it stinks that a team like PHO who is NHL owned beat the Hawks. They had a super goalie paid for by the other teams to beat a team that needed a goalie. How is this good for the league?
- VANTEL

If this is intentional, that's freaking hilarious.

Hossa in the HOF? Really, I have to look at his numbers, but at 1st blush, if he's a Hall of Famer, the the Hall has lost more luster. He should be in the hall of very good. Not Hall of Fame. 926 pts in 978 games and never top 4 or 5 player in the league. IMO

For the record, Luongo is less of a HOFer than Hossa. At least Hossa has a Cup and Mem Cup

When I see players like Doug Gilmour and Adam Oates get elected, Hossa becomes an automatic even if it is in the Very Good section.

If sticking it to the Canucks is your priority for getting Luogo ,then goaltending is not your biggest issue. Move on .
- VANTEL

It is not the priority but a lovely by product. See response in context of prior entry...and cool it.

When the stable of rich "foolish" owners runs dry that's when the players and the league will be in real trouble.

There hasn't been, and won't be any real restraint.

No one gives a sh it about the Memorial Cup. If Hossa gets 500 goals he is a slam dunk HOF.

What does this even mean?

Do you realize where most hockey players in this league are born and raised?

CANADA

And where the most informed and avid fan base resides?

CANADA

I dislike the Hossa deal a lot. I dislike this deal equally. At least Hossa is/was a beast.

Established puck mover, center who wins face offs and winger who can play top 6 minutes and hold the puck with out being a boat anchor would make the team better and be money / assets better spent IMO. Especially if there is over payment involved.

Obviously lots of different opinions on this one. Don't think either is necessarily right or wrong but those three things would be my preferences were I Stan and committee.

Well, baseball does not have a cap but a penalty for spending. It encourages the cheaper teams to not spend money. Hell, teams like the Brewers benefited hard from that. Of course there was nothing going on with Selig ties to that ownership....never.

Baseball enjoys the exemption to the commerce clause, which days are numbered, imho.

Someone said earlier, they need to look hard at trade compensation.

Either PHX needs to be sold to be sold to Quebec or contraction.
