It's not about what he will do, in 6 years. It's what he costs us, moving forward. If he indeed gets us to 10th in the conference, we end up picking at 10 or 11. Where does that benefit this franchise? If he stays away, we pick in the lottery and have a chance at real improvement. The only way that it works, taking him, is if we upgrade our centre position, with a true number one. Get that first, then revisit the Luongo situation. Another year of Tyler Bozak and 1st line centre, does not cut it, going for a playoff spot. - JohnnyReb
You seriously believe that having Luongo in net wouldn't have prevented that disaster last year.
The young guys(Like Schenn) had no faith in the goaltender. It worked its way into their psyche and eventually it melted down.
Young players need to have confidence that any mistake they make won't result in a puck going in the net. Our guys didn't have that assurance last year.

we were 10th in the league in goals per game last year
we were conversly 29th in goals allowed per game last year
This is usually where I insert "you do the math" but I've already done that for you - AngryWhiteMale
It's not all about goals for, when talking about a number one centre. Can that centre make our first line better? Can that number one centre control the pace on the ice, winning key faceoffs, killing penalties and working the powerplay? Can he eat up 20 minutes a night, at centre. In theory, a top end centre can bring your goals against down, by being dominant in his own end and the opposition's end. Our goals against average was down, not totally because of our goaltending woes, but due to shoddy defensive zone coverage and timid behaviour in the corners. Our defence looked bad, when many of our wingers, could not chip the puck past a pinching defender. There were too many rebounds, because we lost puck battles in the slot. Get a dominate centre and it will help correct that issue. |

My guess is Burke likely doesn't want to give up BOTH MacArthur AND Kulemin, and doesn't want to include Blacker at all if he can avoid it.

What I don't understand is people saying to revisit the Luongo situation AFTER getting a no. 1 centre.
Getting a no. 1 centre like Getz would cost so much that we wouldn't be able to make a move for a goalie afterwards. And if the centre we get is Getz, then Grabs would HAVE to be in that deal as they have NOBODY to play centre right now.
So we'd have a no. 1 centre, who we're hoping would increase our offence proportionatly more than a goalie like luongo would decrease our goals against.
And which one of those two assets comes cheaper? Getzlaf(signed at a new deal of 8m per for 7-8 years) or Lu at 5.3 per for 5-6 years

Our defence looked bad because they knew making a mistake would result in another team getting a chance at scoring on a weak goaltender, they're young, and need to trust their goalie.
There weren't too many rebounds because we lost puck battles in the slot. There were too many rebounds because the goalie we had popped rebounds out, instead of gobbling them up, forcing us to scramble in the slot.
Wingers not being able to chip the puck past a defender isn't going to be helped by a no. 1 centre, that's something they just need to figure out through coaching.

First off, Reimers injury is being discounted. This guy is being railroaded, out of town, because he came back ineffectively. He was very good, down the stretch, the year before and was lights out, before the injury. He deserves another stab at it. Gustavsson is gone, good ridence! Scrivens played well, at times, when he was called up. He had a very positive playoff experience and it may translate into a decent NHL carrer. He also deserves a shot at it. Bring in Luongo and you take a gamble at a goaltender that had a better team in front of him, going to a team that is soft and is not good defensively. If he comes in and sh!ts the bed, then the fans will turn on him immediatly! Then you have to deal with his God awful contract. He could set this teams development back another 7 years, if the gamble doesn't pay off. Just think: Buffalo Bills of hockey. Not good enough for the playoffs, not bad enough for a top end prospect in the draft. Hockey purgatory! I don't want that gamble, it's not worth it! |

Our centre's are too small and timid. Connolly? Soft! Bozak, small, soft! Grabovski? Small, quick, but not great on puck battles! Steckle? One dimensional faceoff man, cannot skate and keep up with the play. Do you really think that adding a goaltender and not a centre is going to be corrected through coaching, with this lot of centre's? Grabovski is slotted correctly, the other three are not. At best, Bozak is a third liner and Steckle needs to be moved out. We need that number one centre, for when the score is close, late in the game, or when a penalty needs to be killed at a crucial time. This isn't going to make an appreciable difference, having Luongo in net, with this shooting gallery! |

@MapleLeafs seem to like that deal. Fransson, Kulemin, Colborne, Blacker is more a long the lines of what the @AnaheimDucks likely want
