Well, regardless, the duo came as a package. I've heard both reasons before. In the end, it worked out great for the Leafs and thats all that really matters.

Ducks/Leafs have got together on a few deals, I could see this going down again...hard to come up with a value for Getz being that he is a UFA after the season and had a terrible season...

It wouldn't be a value based on the season but the value required to pry him from the Ducks. Plus, Getzlaf always seemed like a reasonable guy. i'd be shocked if he Suter'd his way through FA next year saying one thing and knowingly doing something else. I get the feeling he'll be signed by whoever owns his rights.

Since he was dealt for Schenn straight up, who was rumored to be dealt for pretty much every superstar in the league (provided the Leafs added a 2nd to the pot)

Lydman-Beauchemin-Fowler-Sbisa-Souray-Allen there's 6 signed right there, all for under $4 mil apiece and all of a sudden Murray's going to trade our number one center for a defenseman they don't need with a ridiculous contract?

How about this, Grabovski, MacArthur, and Kadri for Getzlaf.

Wasn't Getzlaf one of the guys who forced the Carlisle firing. Was watching a game about a week before the firing. Getzlaf was averaging 2 and 1/2 min shifts. Seems like a big F u to the coach.

The idea of trading Getzlaf I could buy, I just dont see the fit with TO. Again, its not that the Leafs dont have the assets to get it done, I just dont see the trade lining up so both sides are happy.

Also, no one knows if Getzlaf is going to sign.

All depends on what's happening behind the scenes. The Ducks may have offered Getzlaf a deal hoping to lock up their captain for the future and he turned it down (similar to J.Staal and Pitts). If he has made his intention known that he has no desire to stay in Anaheim (without going as far as requesting a trade), the Ducks would be shopping him around.

Why?

You can have him walk away next year for nothing, or you can trade him for assets that will help rebuild the team.

Most likely, the Ducks would want Colborne, Frattin or Kadri, and then a combo of either a roster player and a pick, or a prospect and a pick.

Overall, a trade would probably look like
Colborne, Kadri, Franson, 2013 1st

Absolutely. Lupul was a feel good story, despite him being a Leaf and me being a Sens fan. He also seems like a genuinely good guy too so I really hope that the addition of Carlyle doesn't set him back. He seemed like he was loving life in TO without his former and now current coaches thumb presssed heavily down on him all the time.

Getzlaf isnt going anywhere. The Leafs dont have the assets to send to the Ducks for Getzlaf. If the Ducks (repotedly) wanted Coutrier and Scheen for Bobby Ryan, they what do you think they would want back for Getzlaf. And dont give me the BS that Kadri would be the center piece to any deal. I have more trade value than he does. Toronto would have to trade, Kessel, Kadri and 1st maybe even 2 1st's for Getzlaf. And TO wouldnt do that. But then again, we are talking Burke and a Murray deal. Burke would tell Murray that the bag of pucks he is throwing in for Getzlaf will bring the cup within 2 years and Murray would salavate and take a stupid deal. Just like he did when they traded Lupul and Gardiner for Beauchimin.

I agree with you for sure. But, no one knew that Gardiner would come in and play as well as he did. But The Ducks figured they had Shultz in their controll. And why have the likes of Fowler, Shultz, Gardiner and Sbisa, with simular skills and simular age, to be in the system. I think if Gardiner was still ANA property, Shultz would have left to begin with. Murray took a chance and lost. I still think the Ducks did well in the trade dispite losing a blue chipper in Gardiner. Beauchimn has came in and settled the back end. Just sucks to lose good talent.

You're right, it was Schultz he targetted originally....I just meant that the focal point of the trade was Gardiner, not Lupul.
