there's a difference between re-signing a player and recently trading for a player.

Don't be silly. JVR is locked up on a team friendly six year deal and has the potential to be a top line player, possibly the centre the Leafs have been searching for. There is absolutley no chance they are trading him. This is a guy they have been trying to aquire for over a year. I promise you they did not get him to flip him.

The only thing holding up the Getzlaf deal is Burke's refusal (or hesitation) to include his top prospect Nazem Kadri in the deal.

Are the Leafs in Finacial trouble? Why does his salary have to go the other way? You don't get a number 1 starter and get to salary dump your worst dman, without having to pay a huge ransom. So whatever else is in that deal better be huge for the nucks, and i don't see anything the leafs would be willing to give up to be huge for the nucks.

What you are actually hearing is an optimistic Leaf fans twist on what the deal should include.

- Oilhab

The NHL uses this system called a Salary Cap. It's pretty complicated, I don't really get the concept myself. I've been hearing that's the reason why the Leafs would like to move Komi's salary. Crazy eh?

taking the day off.

a 4 day work week was just too much to handle so i decided to take it easy.

gonna pick up some bc's finest for the weekend. really stoked about tomorrow's fights.

Aww yes, thanks that reminds me of what i meant to ask you about earlier, who wins, Silva or Sonnen? I think Sonnen walks out like Rich Franklin did ( i think it was), i think he really awakened the beast. Or the bored Silva shows up and loses and doesnt care and gets bounced from the UFC. Although i am not sure what his contract is or how many more fights he has left under contract.

In no way does Komi help the nucks, None, Zero, Zilch, Nadda

And the leafs can't afford to bury someone?
- Oilhab

Komi has a NMC - you can't bury him.

It's not just his cap hit - it's the fact that he's horrible.

Isn't it much worse to sign a player and then trade him, then to trade for a guy, and then send him off again before he ever pulls a sweater over his head?

They told Hossa they saw him as a part of the future - he signed instead of going to UFA status.

JVR signed with Philly - we have no idea at this point how he even feels about being a Leaf.

- Atomic Wedgie

There are rumblings that JVR wants out, he was excited when Burke told him that Gardiner was going to convince Suter, Parise and Schultz to sign with the leafs. Now he is depressed that he only has kessel to waive the flag with.

Not that the Leafs will trade JVR, or even consider it. But there really is nothing that says they can't. Philly just locked up 2 players to decade long deals and then traded them before the deals even kicked in. JVR himself signed for 6 years and got traded less than a year after signing.

If Ass-bag Holgren can do that and still have people respect him, Burke can do whatever he wants.

How would re-trading a player have any effect on free agent signings?

The guy hasn't even stepped foot in Toronto yet.

The New York Rangers buried Wade Redden - it didn't seem to be a factor in Richards' thinking before inking with them.

Hey, I just made a rhyme!

- Atomic Wedgie

Pretty sure they buried Wade Redden because he sucks!
He had an albatross of a contract, and they had better players on the team.
Pretty sure he played a few games for NYR.
They evaluated the talent and decided to send him down, because they have the $$ to do so.

Had they signed Redden and flipped him for another player, this would definitely be a factor in his signing.
Players want stability. They buy homes in the city they play in. That's why long term deals are so popular with players.

If the GM has a history of acquiring players and moving them quickly, IMO players would be less inclined to join the team.

You gotta give to get and Getzlaf / JVR 1-2 down the middle is a scary option. Despite what everyone says, I can promise you JVR is playing centre until he absolutley proves that he cannot.
- Jimmy_T

But i love Grabbo. All we need is 2 Kessels, 3 Grabovskis,1 Lupul,3 Kulemins,3 Mike Browns, 3 Gardiners and 3 Phaneuf.

And...Bosh there's your team

If you're not aware, there's a salary cap in hockey now (it's been a few years)... Luongo is a bonifide #1, no question. That said, he doesn't have a contract many GMs will jump at. Listen, I had this info passed my way and thought I would share it...take it for what it is...I'm not Eklund, nor am I an insider...but I do know one ...thought it would be fun to throw it out there, in the event it does go down...it's not 100%, but I wanted to put some context around everyone thinking Luongo will go to a team basically for free...he won't and this deal doesn't send Luongo for free either...I'm not an optimistic Leafs fan (probably quite the opposite at this point). Have a good weekend everyone (unless your a habs fan, then I hope your weekend sucks!JK)

I'm gonna give up my source? Not likely. Take it for what its worth, which is less than nothing. I'm just saying. Wait and see then maybe next time you might believe me. Or not. No biggie.

Burke did to that last year with Versteeg. Didnt he get him in the summer and trade him later in the season?

I think that at this point the guy would accept a trade to 28 other teams (obviously he doesn't want to go to Edmonton - nobody wants to go to that godforsaken frozen tundra).

It's the "you can't send me to the AHL" clause that's the tricky part.

Komi has a NMC/Modified NTC (player supplies a trading list that can be modified each June 15)

in other words, we are stuck with him.

I like Grabovski a lot. Outside of looking like a sex offender, the guy is the tits. That being said, he's a valuable trade piece. I would be almost certain he is in a trade for Getzlaf.

Ya he is fine as a utility guy, it was the thinking he was a 40-40 guy and the excessive skiing in hopes of reaching that mark that was his downfall.
