after the veritable college courses you've provided re the merits of Matt carle, youre telling me that coby, mez, schenn, a fading kimmo and the scrap heap are gonna cut it? c'mon...

edit: forgot about nic, ok...a little better, but the puck mover is needed

As with all sports, more than one way to skin a cat.

Some teams have done it with one or two great D - Doughty, Chara, Pronger, Niedermayer, Lindstrom.

Some teams do it with great goaltending - Hurricanes.

Some do it with both.

Does anyone here think the defensemen that Lavy has here are worse than the team where he won the cup?

I like the Gervais signing. but I don't see Schenn and Voracek on the top line with G.
- flyersfan51

I could see Schenn. Voracek's style is probably not a great fit.

That's the flip side. I'm just tossing out names, but I agree Voracek is probably not the best fit for Giroux's line.

I'd just like to see a big, nasty, gritty bastard in the top 6. That's why I'd go after Doan and ignore other options

Had Jvr but got rid of him.

JvR was big. He was not consistently gritty, nor was he nasty.

Seems like my proposal is something the team would have obviously considered but is a few steps shy of being real/legal/legit.
- Daman

I think it is legal. Boston is trying to do it with Thomas. I assume they are waiting until after FA to see which teams need cap dollars.

But I think if it happens with Pronger it would be next year. I think both he and Homer give it one more year to see if he heals.

I don't have a problem with Holmgren's approach. I will say he did not improve the team "on paper" but hockey isn't played on paper. Flyers have a solid young core that should be given the room to mature together.

I think the depth has taken a bit of a hit, if we get the usual rash of injuries like every other year, the lineup will be somewhat thin.

- PLindbergh31

I could see that. concerned about needing a puck mover and another scorer, so we'll see.

The current top 5 is better than the top 5 they had when they went to the conference finals in 2008, at least on paper.

And I still think we will do something on D and Winger between now and the trade deadline. A lot of time.

Schenn probably gets first crack. My second choice would be Read. Defensively responsible, fast, and has a good accurate shot.

Flyers scored plenty last year, and JVR had 11 goals, I don't think scoring is an issue provided the team stays relatively healthy. If there are some injuries among the top 9, then there may be some problems. But that can pretty much be said for every team in the NHL.

Will the Flyers improve on their point total from last year? Who knows, but more consistent play from Bryzgalov will go along way.

Bill or MJL - is there a realistic way the Flyers can trade Pronger's contract to another team that needs to spend the minimum? Send Pronger and a 2nd pick and cash considerations to a team for a 6th round pick. That type of thing?

Is this creativity allowed, feasible, legal, etc?

- Daman

A trade would be allowed, yes. But Pronger's contract is not one that (m)any other teams would want to take onto their cap, because it runs five more seasons and he must be paid in full as if he's on the active roster.

Compare that with Tim Thomas, whose contract can be tolled for not reporting to camp -- his cap hit will count, yet he won't be paid a cent. The contract also only has one season to run.

I do as well. Right now the trade market is too expensive. Bobby Ryan is a good player, but he's not worth Couturier or Schenn in a package. Nash has a massive cap hit and Howson still wants a premium return, which is understandable.

The FA market isn't strong, so GM's are trying to shoot the moon in trades. Overpaying in a trade for a big contract is worse than overpaying a FA

The two most worrisome things I see are injuries on defense and how badly they will miss Carle's strong parts.
- Jsaquella

I'm concerned that the Team defense won't be much better. Also have to hope the goaltending this season is much better. They spent a lot of money on Bryz so hopefully he steps up this year.

was referring to your assessment of the way things went down, not your opinion over what happens next

i'd hope that your right about where we go from here (absent weber being available). i do not, however, agree that this offseason is so clearly the result of some drastic set of miscalculations on homer's part. i think that assumption is a bit of a leap

hence, the mat

- FlyerMike18

my point is that if anyone jumped to conclusions, it was homer. coulda hung onto JVR until after july 1 to see how things shook out. it's obvious the schenn deal has been ready to be made for a while.

If they can't add Doan, I'd look at a guy like Peter Mueller on a cheap, short deal.

Doan was always my first choice even above Parisi, bit I really don't think we are getting him. So what do you guys think about Kyle Wellwood for a third line role? And It will keep with the brothers and BFFs theme.

That's another reason I want the kids to assume more responsibilities. They key is for the kids to be better two way guys. You're not going to make Briere a Selke finalist
