Hmmm. I don't know.

I don't believe Detroit could offer more, ditto for Vancouver.

Actually when the Kings started scoring is when they became the team everyone thought they were and they marched through the playoffs.
- fsanford

The Flyers scored 60 or 70 more goals than the Kings last year.

The point I made in my post still stands, and quite frankly, by a ridiculous margin.

it was good but having just Desjardins and therien on the blueline was another failure. Needed depth and they never got it without a salary cap, that aggravated me. Not getting Curtis Joseph and going for the older cheaper Vanbiesbrouck... ugh allright I'm done they came a long way since those days, let's just say that.

Detroit?

See that's the thing. They don't have young assets to deal other than a few solid prospects (i.e. Nyqvist, Smith) and maybe Filpulla.

Not sure what your point is, all I'm saying is they didn't continue to build a great team around Lindros in the non-salary Cap NHL. IF Lindros, Leclair and Brind'amour weren't firing on all cylinders forget it. Remember Clarke saying something about having a team of big players would wear down the other team. That worked good against the Sabres and aging Rangers of the league, but when he played teams with some skill and speed it was disaster, see 97 finals and getting ousted by Florida the year before.
- JoeRussomanno

How do you say the Flyers didn't continue to build around Lindros. You may not like the direction that Clarke went, but he did continue. You can't say that picking up Recchi, LeClair, and Desjardins is continuing to build a team around Lindros.

I think you are talking Clarke comments out of context - just a bit. I think he meant big guys in the center position. Which, still is a valid position. And, they had some fast guys... I just pulled up the 97/98 line up; Daigle (although he sucked) was one of the faster guys in the league. Sillinger was fast.

you said that it was not a big stretch for me to say that homer would trade for a puck mover, so which is it? I wanted that puck mover last yr when we were in a better position to move assets, that's all. and counting on a UFA is not a plan...
- isaiah520

What do you mean which is it? Using Free Agency to bolster your team is not a plan? Might want to forward that information to the rest of the NHL. What puck mover has been traded that you wanted the Flyers to get recently?

Unfortunately, Holmgren can't force another team to trade them a player he wants. or force a player to sign with the Flyers.

I was pissed with that signing to say the least. Then we lose that year to Cujo in the playoffs Oh yea another humdinger that pissed me off and I probably won't get much support for this was the Brind'amour trade Primeau was nice player but Roddy was head and shoulders better. Even if you just go by durability. oh lawdy I have to stop or I might be stuck in a bad mood for the rest of the day...

I'm happy Flyers have done very little thus far in FA. While I had hoped for a slightly better return on JVR, I think Homer is going to be able to be very aggressive next year on Weber and possibly another forward, Perry?

other than in the 2004 playoff run (and his 5th OT winner in Pitts in 2000), Keith had stone hands.

like I said Brin'amour was the better player, shame we couldn't have gotten more or just kept him somehow.

No, they could've traded for players that haven't been traded? Names you mentioned in the past. Bogosian and Subban. What makes you think they're available? And could the Flyers have gotten either for JVR? You can't trade for what isn't available. If you want to play fantasy Hockey you can talk about anybody.

We're getting into semantics but okay so he continued to build what I should have said is he failed miserably. Case in point when Lindros went down that team sucked royally and were painful to watch. Same could probably be said if Brind'amour ever went down but he never did. Daigle is just an example of how he failed. Another guy mentioned Paul Coffey, and I brought up the miserable mistake of signing Vanbiesbrouck over Curtis Joseph. He failed miserably.

Got me thinking about Clarkie... as the years pass, his greatness as a player is undiminished but as a GM he looks not so great. He overemphasized the importance of "big centermen", Chris Gratton? and undervalued the importance of goaltending.Jeff Hackett? Whenever he signed a goalie he'd say "he's just as good as..." It's funny, for as great as Clarke was, he has no Cups without Parent. You'd think that would have influenced his managerial decision making. I understand his preoccupation with big players as a smaller guy who was usually overmatched in the size and strength department. Oh well.
