Do you think he is worth 3.5? I am actually asking not being a D. I am from London where he played junior, never was a fan. If he gets 3.5, what does Hall & Eberle get next year?

This. I'd be surprised if they get any less or any more for that matter.

Gagner I say is "worth" 2.75-3 a year. He will get 3.5-4.

That seems fair for all involved. I guess it will depend on the new CBA on the term etc.

If he gets 4, that would be crazy but who knows these days

Gagner and arbitration make me nervous.
- GuyLaDouche

Arbitration will sound exactly like hockeybuzz:

That 8 point game was a fluke. He had a BELOW average season

Yeah but if you take away his first 13 games too, it was a pretty average season after all

Exactly, Gagner's stagnated. He's not improving. Same thing every year.

Same thing every year? I thought you were just bashing him for being inconsistent!

Thats exactly my thoughts if not more... Lowe is such a stupid (frank) when it comes to money... I remember when he was so proud for the Horcoff signing... at least he has some others involved now in at least making the terms shorter... I bet Gags comes away with over 4 mill- likely 4.5... The kids can ask for the moon and will likely get it on their second (frank)ing contract...

He is inconsistent... A monkey could get 30+ pts playing with Eberle and Hall FFS... Truth- we do not have anyone else that can play 2c he is the best we have for that position-further as others stated we ruined him and his development and he is what he is... only thing that has changed is reference to hobbit... which he seemingly lost when Cogs went to Ana... and this 60pt forecast has yet to be proven...

I don't think that's true. Look at a guy like Stephen Weiss - top 10 draft pick on a poopty team who went directly into the NHL as an undersized, fairly one-dimensional centre. Seaons of 21, 29, 28, 48, and 42 points before he changed gears. Not saying that's the norm, but I don't think Gagner has been ruined, or that he is what he is.

Check the going rate for 2nd line centers.

If he gets 4 or more we can thank Burke for driving up the price on 2nd line centers.

Honestly, if Gagner gets more than Duchene's term 2YR $7M, that is insane and ridiculous, I honestly don't see it happening. I say $2.75M-$3.2M maximum.
- deks1

Contracts have been inflating. Players with similar numbers are easily getting 4 mil+.

Its funny, fans here have been defending Gagner for weeks saying that he is underrated. Yet when it comes time to pay him, he suddenly isnt worth as much.

Makes no sense.

He's worth 4 mill but not more.... He's not a toews or JT who get 5ish, those are contracts that Hall/Eberle will get next season

P. Kane was 5 yrs 6.3 aav but he had 72 and 70 pts in first 2 seasons. Hall and Tavares exact same ppg in first 2 seasons .75 JT more goals.

Obviously salaries are a hot topic this spring...

Don't like the Dubnyk signing about 1 mill too much and not sure if I like the Petry signing. I think we should have tried to get longer term even if it meant we had to pay alot more. 6 years at 3.5-4 million would have been better imho.
- MrSmitty

The oilers tried that with Tom Gilbert and it didn't work. He went down hill after his first season in oil country.

Clouts you keep talking about all the moves all the other western conference teams have made. Please tell us oh wise one. Who besides Min, Cgy, Van, and Dal, have made significant moves??? And i am being generous when i say CGY made significant moves considering what they gave up. you always say "this team did this so that must mean tambelloni didnt do anything". But how do you know that every player who signs with a team other than the oilers is because tambellini didnt make a move as you have suggested since you became the blogger????
- ruttager17

Well said. We don't know what tambi has tried to do behind the scenes. But Clouts automatically assumes he has done nothing.

Just a quick check (cap hits for 2012-2013 or 2011-2012 if ufa):

Koivu - 3.8
Bergeron - 5
Hecht - 3.525
B.Jones - 600k
J.Staal - 4
Sharp - 5.9
Brassard - 3.2
Stastny - 6.6
Benn - 822k (will be much higher)
Filppula - 3
Matthias - 852k
Richards - 6.67
Cullen - 3.5
Desharnais - 850k
Fisher - 4.2
Henrique - 854k
Nielsen - 2.75
Stepan - 875k
Turris - 1.4
Briere - 6.5
Vermette - 3.75
Malkin - 8.7
Couture - 2.875
Berglund - 2.25
Lecavalier - 7.72
Grabovski - 5.5
Kesler - 5
Ribeiro - 5
Little - 2.38

So, the average salary for the above works out to a cap hit of:

3.73 million

So I guess it wouldn't be a surprise to see around 3.5 for Gags...too high in my opinion as it should be closer to 3.

The problem with arbitration this year is they take recent signings into effect. Gagner might not be amazing but with the prices people are signing for this year he might get over paid by an arbitrator. It is best to sign before. This offseason has been silly. They should sign him for 3.5 for 5 years. It is a contract that can be traded or bought out. They signed Pisani for more and he never played as good. Plus keeping the kid to 28 is not going to kill anyone. With the salaries this year, that is the number the team is looking for, it would show respect from the team to do it without arbitration. If you are going to give Dubnyk almost the same salary as Pavelec, you can pay maybe 250k more for gagner.

If the kids sign for about 4 years at 6mil per, they perform as we expect them too and the cap is near ~70mil, the following contracts will be around 8 mil per... just nuts, but probably appropriate
