If the Canucks trade Luongo, they'll need a back-up and Theodore is a pretty cheap option. Not to mention, if Schneider struggles, Theodore has the ability to become a starter for significant periods of time. That is unless they're okay with going into next season with Schneider as the starter and one of their prospects as the back-up.

And his potential is really, really high. Markstrom is one of the top goaltending prospects in the league. He's 22, 6'6 and has serious potential to be a brick wall like Lundqvist. And this is legit potential. Not the sell job Burke tried with Gustavsson. Just think of what the Leafs should have got for Rask. That's the kind of price tag this guy will most likely carry.

If Burke is smart, he waits a few months into the season and watches closely around the league to see what young players usurp the veterans on whatever team and line, and eventually if he waits, he just find what he is looking for and on the cheap so to say, once a young kid takes a veteran's job and the veteran becomes expendable.

If the Panthers acquire Luongo without trading Theodore as part of the package, I could see Burke going that route but the team would be better off with focusing on the future in net.
