It's kind of funny to think that when most of these deals are signed, (ex. 13 years), the player will remain with the team, while the GM, coach, pretty much everyone else in the organization, will change multiple times

I think the more likely scenario is max term, and current contracts get rolled back, or cut off, at that term (from next year, so if the max is 5 yrs, and a contract is in yr 3 - Luongo - they still get 5 more yrs, then void)

that would be the least painful all around and still avoid future ones. but would (frank) Minnie right in the ass for cap hit both would be over $10M hit

Just make the highest salary year the Cap hit for the term of the deal.

so if it was 7mil 7, 7, 3, 1, 1 ... the cap hit for the 6 years on that contract is 7mil.
