Why would the Avalanche part with depth at center after watching the Kings win a Cup with Kopitar, Richards and Stoll up the middle?

O'Reilly had a good year last year but he's still young and he's still geared to be a more defensive center. Stastny has underachieved in recent years but he has shown 70+ point ability in the past. That's something O'Reilly may never be able to do. Add to the fact that Duchene, albeit good, is still relatively very young, the Avalanche stand to benefit very little by trading away Stastny for spare parts.

This evidently is too logical..

This isnt a good move for the Leafs. Stastny isnt really the kind of guy they should be moving assets for. Hold off for something better.

There is as much chance of Phaneuf being gone, as Burke switching to bow-ties.
- noename09

That's what people said as well when it wasn't Phaneuf but Schenn we were talking about half a year ago...

because they don't make half as much money as the Kings... in fact they lose money...lots of it.

Check their minutes and stats last year. Check Stastny's declining stats and his diminishing roll.

They don't have the luxury of being able to afford a $6.6M player they hope might one day regain his form and earn his money.

The are already playing O'REilly, Stastny, and Duchene essentially the same amount of minuts 5 on 5 and on PP.

O'Reilly and Duchene take larger roles, allowing them to replace Stastny's big $$ with cheaper options who fill lesser rolls.

- Big_Lightnin

O'Reilly played more because Duchene was injured. If all three are healthy, it gives them excellent depth at center.

and they without a doubt are going to replace Statsny and his production with O'Reilly? Who finally broke 50 points while having two 26 point seasons in a row?

Nobody wants depth at center when they can just give one of their top 2 centers away for Tyler "Toews" Bozak.

SO they take scrubs back instead of salary.
- eihcnerf

How is a 50 point 3rd line center, a 60pt winger, and the Leafs top prospect according to the rankings, scrubs? I mean it's not like we're giving them Stajan, Hagman, White, and Mayers.

If youran a team, would you want to pay 6.6 million to a player that may be slotted in as your 3rd line centerman?

Clearly that wattage is used only on co-operating guests.. we would turn that up considerably in your case.

That division is scary. With the Wild loading up on Parise and Suter, the Avalanche would be crazy to give up the depth they have at center. It's probably the only thing that could keep them alive in that division.

And in playing more he proved to be just as good as Stastny...

again, they can't afford him. They'll move him for $$ relief at some point. Might not be to the Leafs, but he'll go somewhere, and it won't be for a very big return.

Avs have players better than him to fill his roll, Leafs don't.

Difference? Burke has publicly stated this is the guy he believes will lead his team for years and wants to build around and named him captain early. Schenn was a largely touted player who has always been on the trade block since almost day one.

Stajan was a 55 point player. Hagman was a 20 goal scorer. White is a top four defender. But surely, Bozak and MacArthur are not scrubs.

Stastny will not be a 3rd line center with the Avalanche. At worst, he plays behind Duchene on the 2nd line.

Ryan O'Reilly scored 79 points last year?

They're 2 million above the cap floor. They can afford him.
