I wouldn't even consider the Flyers in "bad shape" in terms of D. I'd say above average. Having Timonen, Coburn, Meszy, and Grossman as a top 4 is pretty solid. Add a young, Schenn to the team (with coaching direction from one of Hatcher/Pronger), and he can largely effective this year. That #6 spot will be key, as the goal will be to not overextend Timonen's energy throughout the year.

All in all, the defense is more of a "given" than offense. I'm worried about offensive production. Losing JVR/Jagr and replacing with Fedotenko is not a solid move. Sure the younger guys can step up, but they all had amazing seasons last year to begin with. I don't expect much more out of Read/Coots. Schenn may have some room to improve, but I still see this team as another forward short of making noise.

I don't think they are replacing Jagr with Fedotenko, I think its more like Schenn or Voracek and replacing them on the 3rd line with Fedotenko.

Timmonen's health is a concern, if he's not the defenseman we are used to, or let's say misses long stretches then we have a problem, unless Schenn becomes a solid top 4 right away, (which is really the main concern), how long it takes him to improve & play like a projected top 4 guy

Jagr was a stopgap for a year to buy the kids time, I didn't see him staying another year & we shouldn't have banked on him doing so either.

What happens with Timonen/Schenn remains to be seen.

And stopgap or not, you still need to replace his production. Same goes for JVR. Fedotenko does not replace either, let alone both.

Don't know if you saw it but I posted a twitterversation I had with Tocchet. Told him to tell Homer to forget about Parise/Suter if anything get Weber. His reply... Weber is the guy. I think they let Carle go because A. he got offered too much anyway B. They have room left to make a move for Weber.

No, I didn't see that, obviously I agree on that, but the problem is that the cap is so inflated now, that we have less of a chance unless we loss more pieces & create holes in other areas.

I think trade. That's just what I think though... perhaps Free agency next summer, I'd prefer that but not what I think they do.
- JoeRussomanno

I have a hunch Weber never gets to UFA. He'll get dealt and signed to a mega extension to whoever does the trade. That's the danger potentially waiting around for him to hit UFA status. However, if he does become available, I'm sure Holmgren will be one of the first to know

They'd definitely be sending salary to Nashville, question is who? If it's Mezaros, well that's 4 mill right there about half of what you'd need to get him signed.

In all honesty, I think Weber, right now is the least likely for the Flyers to trade for. Price is too high. Nash secondly, and then Ryan being the most likely, but even then the price would have to be something that wouldn't blow Murray out of the water. Read, Gusty/Bourdon, Cousins/Wellwood and a 1st...

I wonder if Ryans comments about him "being comfortable playing in Philly" is very interesting and I wonder if it affects the trade package teams offer, knowing his contract is up in 2 years.

- GirouxForTheShow

I dont think Weber is an unreal option. Nash is unrealistic. In a Weber deal the Flyers shouldn't hesitate to include Coburn, you wouldn't do that in the others

Yes, that's why I added at the end that it's what are you willing to overpay for, and for how much. As an example, I really don't want to trade Couturier or B Schenn. But I would for Weber. But in a lot of cases, even if it makes the team better, it can still be an overpayment.

started to type out a longer response explaining why i disagreed with this part but realized i was getting too far into semantics

let me just say that it depends on whether you're using market value or some kind of subjective value as the baseline. i think your statement is only true if by overpayment you mean over the objective "market value" of the player

sorry, everyone

Who did the Wings sign? Jordin Tootoo?
- Flyers2821

As a flyer die hard I would love to have Tootoo too! lol, If you like Rinaldo and I do you would love Tootoo. I would take Tootoo over Fed and Gerv anyday, even two for one.

Here's a way to replace the missing goals...............giving up less goals against.

seriously, look at the GF & GA stats, we gave up way more than we should have, if we tighten up, Jagr's goals will not be missed

Like I said, What I;d prefer and what I think will happen.... I just think Weber is that good of a Defensemen ( a critical position in and of itself) that you have to try and acquire him without doing too much disruption but being willing to accept the fallout.

If the team defense and goaltending is better this coming season, the forwards don't have to score as many goals as last season

Poile should command the other teams top D man coming back, actually, anyone getting Weber will have him as their #1 D man anyway.
That's the only trade I would include Coburn in, but ONLY a sign & trade, I consider Coburn as untouchable as Courturier, unless another #1 D man comes in, in the deal.

I'm not really sure, but I think were on the same page. I use the logical value of a player based on the NHL market and comparable players. And the benchmarks of past deals.

I think for the most part, overpayment is like pornography. You know it when you see it.

And at 22, he will continue to grow and mature as a player.

Help me out here flyer fans, I am considering trading L. Couture straight up for J. Voracek. It is a keeper fantasy league (33 years running now). Not many would make this deal but I am a firm believer that Jake could be better than Logan one day. I also do not like the Sharks and am willing to concede a lot of goals but similar points. Who would you hockey pool experts do here?

Not that I would pay him what he is most likely going to get but... surprised no one has jumped on the idea of signing Semin....

kick the tires?

Jagr did his thing here and was a great short term signing but who knows coming back for year two may have been different. Jagr likes change and thrives with it and he also has dollars signs for eyeballs

Agreed, in Dallas he will get all the ice time his wonky groin can handle.

I liked him here, & he did a great job, but a 1 year deal was about it, and committing anymore wasn't required

#Flyers may have offered Voracek, Gustafsson, Laughton and a 1st rounder to #Ducks for Bobby Ryan. Looking into it. Wow!

I am sure Semin has a few offers but is waiting to cash in on a big offer or is perhaps targeting one team and is holding off (Detroit) until that team either signs him or when that door closes he will look at his next favourite destination. He will sign in the NHL and it will be for a boatload of cash and the boat too
