As we speak, they're already counting the 40-50 goal seasons they're expecting out of JvR... oh, and he's supposedly playing up the middle, too.

I was having this conversation at work today with a NY fan.

Not too many players in Philly get a lifetime pass and are revered. Even Mike Schmidt wasn't 100% loved.

Bobby Clarke.
Dr. J
Chuck Bednarik

Even our recent Phillies WS champs are getting the fans vote to be booted out of town.

- Daman

I accredit this to the dogma that is preached specifically on WIP which implies that to not boo/act obnoxious is unbecoming of a Philadelphian. The Phillies were due for a bad year. Not trying to get off topic but I expected this on the last play of last season with Howard's injury. Chase Utley's total refusal to get his knees healthy in the offseason is another issue. Once Cliff Lee gets it going tho, they could start rolling with a few roster tweaks. Otherwise a bad season was in order, hell even the Yankees and Red Sox miss the playoffs sometimes.

Then they'll trade him back to you for Giroux after he realizes hiS potential in T.O.

Jagr said the silence from #Flyers after season ended was a sign he wouldn't be coming back. "If they really want me back I think they would probably make some kind of talk before free agency because they had a chance."

I guess Holmgren thought that a 50% raise and the constant @ss kissing required was not worth it.

Qualifier required: unless you're a 4th-line guy like Rinaldo, Carcillo, Eager, Shelley etc who get dismissed as plugs.

Philly's going to love Luke. He gets turned from time to time, but he absolutely destroys people with regularity. I'd also hesitate to buy in to all the Toronto hate... Leafs nation is notorious for either talking a guy up beyond all recognition, or snowballing a few mistakes into fundamental player faults (sound familiar?) -- it's almost always the latter when a guy gets traded. Remember how they treated Sundin at the end? Disgraceful.

- Tomahawk

Granted they usually do turn on players here for whatever reason. I just observe that the guys who partake in the Physical aspects seem to get much more absolution from the fanbase.

You're absolutely right about Luke tho. It's why I've been on the fence pretty much about the trade, then again I'm also thinking that Jvr might have been over-valued by those of us not completely in favor or against the trade. At 22 years old I think if anything he's a raw talent, with the right coaching and mentoring, can become one helluva talent.

Mmmm, not sure I agree.

Both Lupul and Smid were top-10 picks in their draft years... Lupul was slated to become a top-line winger, Smid a shutdown 1st-pairing defender. That conditional 1st turned out to be a boon for the Oilers, turning into Jordan Eberle. The other first was dealt to move up in the draft to take Riley Nash, who looks like a bust but was highly regarded. Anaheim dealt that 2nd-rounder and the Islanders used it to pick Travis Hamonic, a current top-4 D.

Both were massive payments of similar scale... the only true distinction is that ANA won a Cup w/ Pronger and the Flyers came up a game and a goal short.

- Tomahawk

I guess I was kinda looking at it the way the NFL uses that chart to value draft picks, for example the 20th pick in 1st round is equal to a 1st next year, 2nd this year and a 4th. Because you don't know who the picks will turn into at the time you are making the trade.

Factoring in hindsight of who the picks turned into, Anaheim gave up the most, then Philly, then Edmonton. But my whole point is that considering we got a 34 yo Pronger with 1 year on his contract for a package that was comparable to what Anaheim gave up for a 30 yo Pronger and much more than Edmonton gave up for a 27 year old Pronger, it was definately an overpayment.

Team Canada WJC alums always seem to be overvalued at draft time, and I think that had a lot to do with why Schenn was ranked so highly prior to the draft and why Toronto thought they were taking a "franchise" player at 5th-overall. Call it the Pierre McGuire effect.

I don't think anybody's expecting Schenn to be a franchise level player, but I do think he's capable of being as intimidating and dominating as a Stevens/Potvin was in his own zone when he gets everything sorted out. The offensive upside, on the other hand, is more or less fictional -- he's mediocre in that regard and probably will always be.

If he's that tough in his own zone, I'll be happy. Not sure JVR is gonna be a (edit) two-way forward so if we got a more one way defender I suppose it's an even trade that helped both teams.

So am I.

Ryan > Nash strcitly stat wise in On/Ice Goals for per 60 minutes.

Obviously the former benefits from playing on a superior team and with better linemates.

Luke doing his best Brayden impression

going with the kids

I'm excited

also think their needs going forward are pretty well defined
one more skilled winger, a puck moving defenseman preferably someone with a good PP shot, maybe some more size on the wing?

Pretty much. I guess it's better for the ratings to rile the masses up with vitriolic nonsensical outrage as opposed to being diligent and knowledgeable.

Yeah i called him out on that. He blamed it on the heat and called it a mistype. Besides that he has had some pretty good calls over the past few months.
