Both guys making decisions today. It's got to be a package deal. What teams other than the Wild have made offers to both players?

Määttä vs. Laughton came down to this: potential shutdown defenseman with modest offensive upside vs. potential shutdown center the organization believes has untapped offensive offensive potential as well.

They decided Laughton was the best available player. We won't know for about five years if they made the right call.

The non-Flyers scout with whom I texted shortly after the Laughton pick likened his potential to John Madden -- and Madden in his Selke-winning prime was a player than any team in the NHL would have killed to have, despite his somewhat modest offense.

If that's how Laughton develops, no complaints here. It would be gravy if the Richards/Henrique comparisons that the Flyers and Laughton himself come to fruition.

i have no problem w/ the laughton pick

i was seriously surprised and disappointed when they didn't take dalton thrower, though. especially for what seems like a guy they could have easily taken in the 4th round.

Could it be that we all thought Suter was sitting waiting for Parise to make a decision when in reality it was the other way around?

Parise clearly would love to play in his home town but that team has a pretty weak defense, which would drastically be improved with the addition of Suter.

Does Suter deciding on Minnesota sway Parise to sign in his home town?

I think so.

Heatley-Koivu-Parise would be a pretty nasty line.

I hope the dominoes start to fall today and the Flyers are not strapped with another insane contract.

Happy big F off to king George day.

Food for thought. If the patriots of that era were as complacent as people today what would have become of this land?

Everyone be safe today.

Not sure but the Flyers are one of them. Let's see if they leave money on the table.

Get used to the long contracts. It is the new way of doing business in the NHL.

With wads of cash in their hands.....

Parise stated he speaks to Lou Lam 3/4 times a day.

That in and of itself would drive anyone crazy.

I don't think Ben Franklin would've shown up to the White House that year he hoisted the Cup up out in a thunderstorm.

It's a miracle that the Flyers have survived thus far in free-agency w/o blundering yet... thanks to Suter/Parise/Doan delaying their decisions, many members of the overrated/overpaid club that the Flyers might have considered are already off the table: Garrison, Wideman, Parenteau, etc.

I'm surprised that a guy like Colaiacovo is still on the board. He averaged about 19:00 TOI during the regular season, played against top competition, held his own as Pietrangelo's d-partner, was the Blues best d-man in terms or pushing the play up the ice, and has the tools to contribute on the PP. Durability is always going to be an issue with him, but as far as him being a great short-term plugin for Carle, there probably isn't a more affordable/effective option on the UFA market.

I'd also steer clear of handing Doan a 3-4 year contract, especially when a comparable guy like B. Morrow would most likely be available for pennies on the dollar, with only a year left on his contract.

Speaking of, kinda...any thoughts or rumors on how the captaincy is going to be handled next year?

Pretty sure it is a foregone conclusion that #28 will be the Flyers captain for the next decade.

Also leaves room to add some 4th line grit on short term deals, like Winnick, Kostopolus or even Fedotenko or Jay Pandolfo as veteran presence
- Jsaquella

Pandolfo is done. But I do like the idea of adding a gritty fourth-liner (preferably Halpern?) that could do some heavy lifting defensively to take some of that burden off of G and Coots.

4th of July all makes sense for Philly. I'm very doubtful though. Can't wait for the mayhem to start for teams who lose out.

I hear that pesky cup is not to easy to fly in thunderstorms at the end of some twine.
