I feel if he was signing there, he would have done it a year ago or earlier
Poile didn't do right by the team either & he messed up - puckhead17
I still think Poile felt that Suter just wanted to test the waters, and would give the Preds a chance to match. Poile sounded really wounded in the call today. He put a ton of stock into Suter's character and word and got screwed.
True, he could have made a move sooner, but he really trusted Suter's word that he wanted to be a pred.

Seemed pissed that Suter hadn't mentioned these "family desires" in the past year either during negotiations.

I try and make a move for Ryan still. That's kind of what I've wanted all along, but, again, I'm not condoning it unless it's the right trade for us, so no moving Schenn and/or Couts.
We'll see what happens, but I have a feeling Homer will stay aggressive as always and some news will come down in the next 24-48 hours.
At the end of the day, it's all business. - Pat MaGroin
It is, but there's a human element to it. Look at Cliff Lee. He did get a poopload of cash from the Phillies, but he left a LOT of money on the table in walking away from the Yankees and Rangers.
Had Suter taken the Preds offer, he'd have left significantly less money on the table.
I guess I'm just saying, Suter could have just said he wasn't staying in Nashville, and saved Poile a lot of grief.

I believe he also publicly challenged Poille to show him that he could put the pieces together for a cup contender. Poille went pretty hard at guys at the trade deadline. I'm sure he feels pretty betrayed now.

No offense, but your fairly new here. Ask anybody on here, who knows and understands the Cap better then I do? Have you read the CBA? I've read it multiple times. - MJL

I totally understand what your saying, and agree. If Suter indeed intended to home the entire time, he should have told Poile privately. I know it's a cliche but how many time do we hear it, "hey its a business". Suter in the end ultimately exercised his rights as a UFA and left Nashville. I'm just speculating but maybe Poile was also angry because this puts a big dent in his attempt to lock Weber up long term.
IMO, this is why a financially well off club is better off acquiring quality pieces to get close to the cap when you have a $4.9 LTIR chip available. For example, if you trade 2 players with a cap hit at the deadline with an AAV of $3 million you can acquire a player with an AAV of $7.9 million assuming you had zero cap space. Does that make sense? - jstross
No your better off being under the Cap and not using LTIR, if you want to make a deal at the deadline. You can't bank Cap space if you are using LTIR. And the Cap hit you can take on during the Season gets smaller and smaller as each day goes by, when your using LTIR.
It's pretty amazing the large market teams this off season have not been able to land the big fish (i.e. Detroit, Philly, NYR, etc.). I wonder if this will be a trend going forward. Lots of "other things" coming into play rather than the "i need to win a cup now" mentality. Brothers wanting to play together. Players wanting to be close to their roots. Playing for your country. Very interesting.

And with all the very long term deals given to young players, the pool of high-end UFA talent will grow smaller and smaller every year.
Next thing you know, guys like Prust will sign for 2.5 MIL/per.... oh wait!
Everyone was shocked with the 10 year term for Ehrhoff. 10 years at $4M per isn't looking as bad compared to Suter deal. Similar stats and age. Not saying Ehroff is Suter but Suter isn't $58M better either.
Truth be told, I don,t mind the Prust deal so much as he fills a need the habs have had for years now. - Pecafan Fan
Habs and Sabres are beefing up their rosters to deal with the Bruins. Montreal got Prust and Armstrong. Buffalo picked up Ott and Scott. Boston will not be getting away with running people over in the division anymore. If they try, guys like Prust, Armstrong, Kaletta and Ott will take liberties with Seguin and Krejci.

No question about it. The Ehrhoff deal is a great deal now looking better by the day.
