I hate to say this but Guss is getting no love here, he played really well in the #6 role last year whenever they called upon him, not saying he would replace Carle's minutes, but he can take some off of some of the other guys & can also skate & move the puck very well. - puckhead17
He will certainly be in the mix, but I believe he is still waivers eligible, so he will likely be the odd man out unless he really earns the spot in camp. |

So far, I am content with the Flyers off season.
Leighton wasn't a popular move, but it wasn't a bad one. Leighton's a capable goalie, who the coach won't feel compelled to get a lot of time in to develop. He's also a guy who's going to know his role and be happy to be back in the NHL after 2 years in the AHL.
On defense, bringing in Luke Schenn gives the Flyers a pretty solid top 5. Assuming Timonen is healthy, they have him, Coburn, Grossmann, Meszaros and Schenn. That leaves Gervais, Lilja, Walker, Gustafsson, Bourdon and Manning to fight for the 6th and 7th spots.
Up front, they'll have Giroux, Briere and Couturier down the middle, with Hartnell, Brayden Schenn, Simmonds, Voracek and Read on the wings in the top 9. All of those guys are capable of scoring 20 goals. Add in Talbot and Eric Wellwood and there's the makings of a very speedy 4th line. They'll also have some grit in Sestito, Rinaldo and Shelley.
The other thing they could have is-gasp-cap room to make a deadline or in season deal, especially with the ability to LTIR Pronger if need be, and to send Shelley and Walker(or others) to the AHL. If there's a bonus cushion, they will have flexibility they have not had in a long time.
The final thing is, it's July 4th. There's plenty of time for Holmgren to make more moves. People act like this is the trade deadline and the team they will have through thick and thin. It might be the team that starts the season, but there's still plenty of moves that can be made. - Jsaquella
as well as I touched on earlier, if you look at the other teams depth wise, no one really "trumps" us in comparison to the defense, it looks as though almost every team has a hole on D (some 2 holes).

sounds nice, but if homer can't get things done this summer, the team is not as good as last yrs and making in-season trades for the kind of dman we need are not made then as easily as now. adding a forward, ok |

Itll be bittersweet for him though. To lose both guys, thats nuts. Weber is probably gone, I mean, he just saw the money thats out there, hed be crazy to stay there.
Poile should give him till the end of the week to make a long term committment, otherwise ship him out, cause closer to trade deadline teams are going to not give up so much for a rental
EDIT: AS much - aosplayo
I agree, he should have done that with Suter 1 1/2 - 2 years ago, as they are really female doging about getting nothing back for him |

No offense, but I see Kimmo get "pounded" pretty bad over the course of the season as well, (not to say Gus is he), but Gus was steamrolled in the Pitt series last year & came away pretty well. - puckhead17
Gus has a long way to go to be mentioned in the same breath. right now he needs guarded mins. |

earning a spot may depend on the coaches love for having a veteran again, as I think he did well & earned his spot due to Kubina either being hurt or ineffective in last years playoff. |

I agree with what you just said, but you only listed 5 forwards in the top 9? Wellwood cn handle that IMO. - jstross
I listed Giroux, Hartnell, Briere, Schenn, Read, Couturier, Voracek and Simmonds.
I don't think Wellwood can score enough to be a true top 9 forward, at least not yet. He's got great wheels, and occasionally pulls a great move out of his ass, but he's not going to score consistently enough to be full time in the top 9, IMO.
I'd be trying to get Peter Mueller to agree to a one year deal for under $1.5mm. He returned in January and managed 16 points in 32 games for the Avs this past season. His past concussion history is worrisome, but the kid has talent if he can stay healthy. |

they draft dmen so well, they can absorb this ok, but it's a shame for them that they couldn't get compensation...but when you're a real cup contender
guess they chose rinne over suter, really |

If they can send Gus to and from the AHL without risking waivers claims, he'll be the guy to go-unless he's head and shoulders above the others. |

right, but a nice 12 minutes in the 3rd pairing will ease up the higher pairs.
He can move the puck, (not confusing his body with Coburn or Grossman), but he can play an up temp game |

yes they do, but losing Weber for zip will make them a lottery team, they are already a lesser team w/o Suter |

The Kings were an 8th place team and made their Stanley Cup run with a lot of help from deadline moves.
The Flyers are an imperfect team as situated now, but the improvements can come without making moves. Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier getting better in their second seasons would make the team better. Same with Read. Voracek and Simmonds are also young enough to improve as players.

yeah, I guess it's mute with Lilja still here for another year, he may be considered a safer option by the coaching staff |

Bruno Gervais is a capable, if inconsistent, depth defenseman. He's got decent offensive skills and a good hard point shot, but struggles if forced to play too many minutes against better competition.
He'll be in the mix for the third pair. |

They also have the cap room to waive Lilja and send him down and have the dead cap room, if worst comes to worst |

LA had assets ready to move and elite goaltending. as currently constituted, the flyers are a fringe cup contender...it's still early though.
edit: and they are small |

Not necessarily. He's more proven than Gus or MAB. He's also a RH shot, with decent size. It probably helps that he's a good friend of MAx Talbot |

They are small up front, but they can rectify that with a couple of cheap signings. Several solid 3rd/4th liners with size or at least grit left in FA pool. They could also make a trade.
I'm more willing to wait and let the young core of the team develop, rather than running out now and trading young assets for a guy like Ryan or Nash. If Shane Doan leaves Phoenix, I'd be very interested, especially if he's willing to take a 2 year deal.
The Kings also allowed their talented young players to grow together and develop into a championship team. |
