I don't believe the rookies will have a sophomore slump. Unlike most teams, the Flyers forwards still have plenty of room to grow even with their production which was at a high level last year. Just the experience gained by Coots, Schenn, and Read from last year should make them even stronger contributors this year.
- ravishingone

that's a little iffy for me...want another vet to sure things up. jags really help w/ that last yr.

No offense, but your fairly new here. Ask anybody on here, who knows and understands the Cap better then I do? Have you read the CBA? I've read it multiple times.
- MJL

No offense, but being "new" shouldn't have anything to do with anything.

No need to get snarky.

I agree. Flyers just have to fill some holes. I don't think any of holes are huge but little ones that can be done.

IMO, this is why a financially well off club is better off acquiring quality pieces to get close to the cap when you have a $4.9 LTIR chip available. For example, if you trade 2 players with a cap hit at the deadline with an AAV of $3 million you can acquire a player with an AAV of $7.9 million assuming you had zero cap space. Does that make sense?
What Bill said is true. But in that example, if the team would spend that $1.3M to get to the upper limit, they would then have Pronger's full LTIR allowance to use. LTIR allowance begins on day 1 of the Season.

Not sure if it's going to be possible, but if they can somehow avoid using LTIR, that would be great.

That's fine, then I'm assuming you would be looking for the minor tweak as opposed to the major roster shake-up?

Just for fun, put a package together for Nashville to acquire Weber, in my estimation, after losing Suter for nothing I don't see him, (Poile), getting bit in the ass again, (I could be wrong), because after Weber is gone they are a lottery team unless he gets a package for him that fills holes

I would not trade Coburn, he is as untouchable as Schenn, Couts etc, but for Weber, it's a different story.

Carle's Twitter bio will go from:

"Playing defense for the Philadelphia Flyers, home of the greatest fans in the NHL. Born and raised in the best place in the world, Anchorage, Alaska."

Yea Weber is gonna cost. I saw some buffalo scenarios that included Tyler Myers, Stafford and 1sts. Tyler Myers is a nice chip to have

if we could add a good young dman, I'd be ok with a major trade. forward could be a fill in vet.

my real concern is that the season will start and the lack of puck movers will force homer to make a trade out of desperation and that's when big mistakes can be made in terms of value exchanges.

True-Dat

and imagine, he would be as untouchable as it gets for Buffalo, but you figure any team can exchange it's top D man in the package because Weber will become the top D man going the other way.
I would imagine anyone except Giroux would be possible for only him on our team, including one of our prized kids in a package.

I hate to say this but Guss is getting no love here, he played really well in the #6 role last year whenever they called upon him, not saying he would replace Carle's minutes, but he can take some off of some of the other guys & can also skate & move the puck very well.

So far, I am content with the Flyers off season.

Leighton wasn't a popular move, but it wasn't a bad one. Leighton's a capable goalie, who the coach won't feel compelled to get a lot of time in to develop. He's also a guy who's going to know his role and be happy to be back in the NHL after 2 years in the AHL.

On defense, bringing in Luke Schenn gives the Flyers a pretty solid top 5. Assuming Timonen is healthy, they have him, Coburn, Grossmann, Meszaros and Schenn. That leaves Gervais, Lilja, Walker, Gustafsson, Bourdon and Manning to fight for the 6th and 7th spots.

Up front, they'll have Giroux, Briere and Couturier down the middle, with Hartnell, Brayden Schenn, Simmonds, Voracek and Read on the wings in the top 9. All of those guys are capable of scoring 20 goals. Add in Talbot and Eric Wellwood and there's the makings of a very speedy 4th line. They'll also have some grit in Sestito, Rinaldo and Shelley.

The other thing they could have is-gasp-cap room to make a deadline or in season deal, especially with the ability to LTIR Pronger if need be, and to send Shelley and Walker(or others) to the AHL. If there's a bonus cushion, they will have flexibility they have not had in a long time.

The final thing is, it's July 4th. There's plenty of time for Holmgren to make more moves. People act like this is the trade deadline and the team they will have through thick and thin. It might be the team that starts the season, but there's still plenty of moves that can be made.

until proven otherwise, Gus is a guy the other teams will pound into the glass until he's rendered ineffective. I would guard his mins until he's shown he can handle the grind over the course of a season.

I believe Schenn is a better puck mover then Grossmann. His point totals weren't great, but he didn't get much PP time, which he probably won't get in Philly either. Also, I'm assuming the Flyers forwards are overall deeper in skill level then the Leafs, which should allow Schenn to accumulate more points this season then his highs in Toronto.

No offense, but I see Kimmo get "pounded" pretty bad over the course of the season as well, (not to say Gus is he), but Gus was steamrolled in the Pitt series last year & came away pretty well.

This meltz may answer your question.

Bottom line: Matt Carle is good but he is not a top 20 Dman in NHL. Cap hit and especially # of yrs were beyond what Flyers would commit ... (via @billmeltzer)

Itll be bittersweet for him though. To lose both guys, thats nuts. Weber is probably gone, I mean, he just saw the money thats out there, hed be crazy to stay there.

Poile should give him till the end of the week to make a long term committment, otherwise ship him out, cause closer to trade deadline teams are going to not give up so much for a rental

EDIT: AS much

I agree with what you just said, but you only listed 5 forwards in the top 9? Wellwood cn handle that IMO.
