Well, for one thing, Gervais is supposedly good buds with Talbot. For another, signing Gervais might open the door for them to trade a defenseman in a move for Ryan or something else.

How do we know if Holmgren wasn't talking to Carle this whole time but has had to wait for Suter to sign because Carle wasn't going to sign until that happened first?

I agree. And I think the odds of Carle coming back aren't great. But Gervais isn't exactly an exciting acquisition. He's just a body, and no better then Lilja. So I don't know what's up.
