They also use free agency to patch things up until their team is ready to contend through that internal build.

Habs will have expiring contracts in two years and premiere talents coming up through the system.

And to reiterate, Bergevin's yet to make a mistake.

Parenteau for four years would've been that mistake. You don't take on maybes for lots of money when you have sure bets coming up through the pipeline.

Not to say Parenteau is overpaid. He went for market value, and the market for him was high because he scored 67 pts last year, and there weren't too many of him available out there. I don't think the Habs would've cared about paying him a high salary, but to take him on for four years when they'll have better wingers wouldn't have made sense.

While I don't believe he necessarily has either, it's tough to assert the bolded when the team and staff he is assembling has yet to play a single game.

Carey Price's deal is equivalent to him making 3.61M against the cap in 05-06.

Andrew Berkshire ‏@AndrewBerkshire
The deal Gainey gave to Theodore back in the day is equivalent to 9.6M against the cap today. So don't try to tell me Price is overpaid.

Can someone please tell me WTF Rinne has done in this league? As far as I'm concerned, Price is more accomplished than him. (3 All Star games) Rinne has no hardware at all, not as many All star appearances but yet its considered a gamble because he's paid as much as him.

Rinne is a good goalie.

Like the habs, the preds relied on him and their star dmen to make the playoffs every year.

They should do it for Subban.

But such contracts with a goalie are suicidal.

to be honest, I like Price, but I wouldn't consider All Star Games appearances as "accomplishments", especially these days, since it's just a big popularity contest.

Was just wondering that myself. Another guy whose contributions go under-appreciated until he's gone.

Teams should not tie themselves to players for so long. In the event things go sour, it can become a big problem.

Agreed. Let's be honest, he went to the AllStar game because no other Habs deserved it...
