Terrible trade. You trade the guy who has led your team in points in three of the last five seasons (and had the highest ppg average on the team in his injury shortened season) after he has his FIRST bad season in 6 years. Oh yeah, he's in a contract year too. What do you trade him for? A (frank)ing bucket of pucks. Hey look, we've got Paul Gaustad back... complete with 2 goals in 18 career playoff games! Talk about useless.
Let's go down the list of all of the scapegoats that have been run out of town to protect Lindy Ruff:
Miro Satan
Dimitri Kalinin
Max Afinogenov
Ales Kotalik
Tim Connolly
Derek Roy
Remember, each one of these guys was the reason that the Sabres couldn't get over the hump. Each time it has been proven to be a lie. There is one common denominator and that is the idiot behind the bench. - lacaprup
all of those really knew how to carry a purse |

So who's the new scapegoat and "cancer in the room?" I'm going to guess it'll be Drew Stafford. So when the Sabres flame out again this season, we can all blame Stafford and forget about the moron coaching the team. - lacaprup

Stafford or Vanek. Leino is too easy. |

No evidence of that has EVER been shown. Stop being a typical Buffalo sheep. If Bulldog on WGR says it, it must be true. What a joke. Lindy Ruff is the cancer in the locker room. - lacaprup
I understand your point!
However, what do you suggest they should have done with Roy?
The minute that he opened his mouth at end of the season, you knew he was going to be gone, didn't you? Maybe, that's what he wanted. I really think he wanted to be shipped out of Buffalo. He got his wish.

Ott to wear 28 - Irish 14
Cool
28 is made up of 2 and 8
2=Tim Horton
8 = Jim Lorentz
8/2 = Bobby Orr
8x2 =Marcel Dionne
2 to the 8th power is 256 which, when added, equals 13 = Teemu Selanne
256 when multiplied = 60 = Otto Graham
2x5+6= 16 = Butch Deadmarsh (one of the coolest names in hockey)
Just sayin'

To keep scape-goating players so that you can have the same terrible coach for 15 seasons.
I'm also not opposed to trading Roy, but not for a totally useless player like Ott. |

He's in a contract season. You keep him here and reap the benefit of the fact that he's playing for his final NHL contract this season. He'll be a ppg player, you can book it. |

Darcy just called in to WGR, he's been on the phone and trying to work another trade all night. While he was working on getting another center he got wind of all the negativity around town about the Roy trade and contacted the NHL and has since had the trade cancelled. He said he couldn't have a fan base that was so alienated wi the actions of management that they would litter Internet message boards with comments about his work. He closed by adding that as soon as he makes a few more calls he will resign along with Lindy. He really hopes this is enough to calm down the chat traffic and make for a wonderful off season.
Oh wait that didn't happen. Roy is gone get over it. |

Good trade for both teams. Sabres increased their toughness and Dallas gets back a player who will probably give them 70pts. next year.
Some other thoughts:
-This signing means Weber is here for sure, which poses a numbers problem on defense. I think we will see a trade coming.
-Same thing is true at winger right now. Look at the following lines:
Vanek - Hodgson - Pommer
Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Leino - ?Grigerenko? - Ott
That leaves: Gerbe, Tropp, Kaleta, McCormick, Scott, Ellis. That's a log jam. So does gerbe go? Is there a market for Leino if you include others (like Pysyk and Armia)? Could Vanek and/or Pommer be gone?

Unfortunately, the cost of obtaining Roy was high. Much of the team's "Pesky Stars" identity -- which spurred the club to become the NHL's top third-period comeback team over the past two years -- was forged by Ott and other club leaders. Without question, Ott is going to be sorely missed in Big D.
Ott was a player whose value really couldn't be measured in stats: he was a physical and emotional tone-setter, a world-class agitator, a player who could be plugged into a variety of roles or game situations, an had evolved into a locker room spokesman and leader. As much as he got under the skin of opposing players and was widely disliked elsewhere for some of his on-ice antics, he was also the type of player that everyone wanted on their own side.
Unlike former Star Sean Avery, to whom he often gets compared, you never hear former teammates say anything but positive things about the experience of playing with Ott. He has no aspirations to be anything but a hockey player, and does not put his own agendas in front of the team's needs (on or off the ice). Even opponents who detest Ott on the ice respect him as a person off the ice. - Bill Meltzer

I agree, we got log jams everywhere. I think Pommer and/or Stafford are going next. If Bobby Ryan is the return then I will be happy. Need to ditch some Dmen in a deal too.

We're going in a different direction, and are looking to get bigger, as our draft and acquisitions indicate.
Will this trade still be a "bad trade" If we get a major point producer?

"Ott was a player whose value really couldn't be measured in stats."
i.e. Ott was a player who actually contributed very little to the on-ice success of the Dallas Stars.
Until Lindy Ruff is gone, and this GM stops protecting him, the Sabres are a one round playoff team at the very most. |

Who? Surely not Ott. They saved a whooping $1 million in cap space on this deal and lose the guy who is in his contract year. They're losing a major point producer!
I can't see anything Darcy does now that will make swapping a 1/2 line center for a 3rd line winger a good move. If he goes after another center, why couldn't he have used Roy in that deal to get a better player? |

A major point producer who's best contribution to this team, at least since the summer of 2007, was leaving the lineup for the year. |
