The surgery to repair it is much more drastic I believe. Drilling through the bones. staples in the bones. It ain't pretty. I haven't had MCL surgery but I think its much more rare that they resort to it. Partly because I think full tears are extremely rare. But yeah I think its a quicker recovery too.
