If Burke is not making a pitch for Parise he is not doing his job.
The Leafs are far too low on talent to balk at top notch talent.
I'm not saying Parise is a perfect fit, but stating he has no interest in the available UFA's is ridiculous.
McClement? Seriously? - Barx
Burke probably offered him 6 years at 6 mil
Parise shat himself laughing and told him "(frank) you". |

I think the funniest tweet I read last night was from a huge Gustavsson fan, I think it is a guy called Oakley or something like that, I'm paraphrasing, "with Gustavsson in net, now the Wings are stacked and Stanley Cup champs next year" |

Yea, and Burke always tells the truth.... - IRON.MAIDEN
how stupid is it to state to leaf nation he has no interest in parise?
if he talked to him, why not say 'parise has decided to play elsewhere', at least leaf nation knows he looked into it for chrissakes |

While I tend to agree that he should at least be making a pitch for any UFA that would help the team it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that he's not coming to Toronto. Part of that is Burke's fault since he's said he won't give a contract over 5 years in length but part of that is completely out of his control: Parise, if he has any brains in his head, would just plain not play in Toronto if given the option to play anywhere else at even remotely the same pay. End of story.
Richards was a bit of a different story last year because he absolutely would have fit into our team structure, would have been our #1 centre and MLSE can afford to splash down whatever amount of money possible. Maybe it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to sign with NYR anyway but at least be in the hunt for him, they offered him something sure but nothing past a 5 year deal and everyone knows that wasn't going to work when every other team is offering him 10 year deals with piles of money at the front-end of the contract. They should have done better there, maybe it still wouldn't have amounted to anything, but they still should have tried.
We aren't getting Parise, we aren't getting Suter and there isn't much outside of that worth getting. So now we turn to trades. If Burke can pry and legit #1 centre and a starting goaltender out of somewhere we'll have a legit shot at the playoffs and maybe more but if all he's going to do is tweak what we have with mediocre backups and 2nd string centres then we aren't going anywhere any time soon. |

Problem with the trade route is that nobody is lining up to get rid of their stars. Nash is sitting there but there isn't much else. Also we lose major assets trading for stars.

We scoff at the idea of Nash and Luongo with their massive cap hits...
....yet beg Burke to sign a UFA which would cost the exact same, if not more..
TSN was guessing Parise could get a 100mil deal.
No thanks. |
