Spoke to Martin Brodeur. He said conversations he's had with Zach Parise were encouraging that captain might stay |

While I like Marty...he held Jersey hostage for money. He wasn't going anywhere else.
WAS a great goalie. No way you win a cup with him as #1 goalie in net. |

Brodeur on ZP: "but I think the Devils went to the forefront with him and I’m pretty positive that he’ll come back to us, but we’ll see.”
Don't do that to us Marty. |

I dont see why Parise is even looking at other options. He wants to be the leader and have "his" team. Well IMHO the Devils is HIS team and he is the face of the franchise. He needs to get over the Langenbrunner trade and look as Kovalchuck as his wing man, not a silent competition to be the leader of the team.
Here is my take on his short list of teams....
Detroit- He will be in the shadow of Dats and Zetty. He will never be seen as the the leader in Detroit. And probaly wont even see an "A" on his jersey more than less a "C". The only thing I can see is here is the Red Wings are always a cup contender, but I also think the Wings are on the verge of sliding down the mountain rather than up. I can see the Wings entering rebuilding mode within the next 2-3 seasons.
Philadelphia- Dont even get me started here. Zach if you choose the Flyers I will think its more like a big slap in the face to NJ. Again if he chooses Philly, he will not be the leader or the franchise player. This is Giroux's team now. He is the Philadelphia Flyers. Nuff said on both those thoughts for him not to choose the Flyers.
Pittsburgh- Out of all the teams, Zach is thinking about going to a team with Crosby and Malkin? I can understand that thier chances of winning the cup will greatly increase with Parise on the team, but what does Parise want? HE wants to be the leader and he wants HIS team. I am really baffled about this choice.
Minnesota- This is probaly the only ideal team I can see him going to besides staying in NJ. He would be the face of the franchise here, and he will HAVE his team. However Minnesota is a few seasons away from even being a cup contender. Will Parise wait that long? And does he trust that the Minnesota organization will bring in quality players in the near future? Something he should think about.
New Jersey- Really, his best option is to stick with the Devils, for many reasons...
1. He is the franchise player, and the Devils IS his team.
2. He is a fan favorite in NJ. Everyone loves Marty, but in due respect, when you think of the New Jersey Devils you also think of Zach Parise.
3. His supporting cast. Kovy, Gionta, Carter, Zajac, Clarkson, Elias, Henrique, Broduer, Boulton, Larrson all p[lay thier role and let Zach take control of the team. THEY all know he is the leader, and they all look at him as a leader, including Marty.
4. They are closer to winning the cup than any of the team mentioned above.
Well thats what I think, I am not a Devils fan, but they are the most respectable team in the NHL. They always find a way to make the playoffs. Gotta give it to Uncle Lou, he has does a great job with payroll and putting together a group of promising guys that will be competetive for years to come.
Stay in NJ Zach! |

Let's see, Martin Brodeur is 40 years old and in decline for a few years now. He has been statistically outperformed by his backups for four years running. The Devils allow fewer goals against and have a higher winning percentage with Hedberg in net than Brodeur -- and it isn't really even close.
Hedberg has had some nice seasons in NJ and is still a solid backup, maybe even 1B. But he's 39, and there's no way to know if or when he might pull a Roloson and slide off the cliff.
Both these guys got signed to 2-year, 35+ deals at a combined cap hit of $5.9 million.
I can't be the only one who thinks that this could get really, really ugly for NJ if Brodeur -- or worse, both of them -- irretrievably lose their mojo with a year or more to go. |

Funny thing is he had bigger offers on the table.
Devils offered him a one-year deal for more than 4.5 million. Chicago reportedly offered him 2 years 12 million. |

I don't exactly like the two-year deal thing, but I would most likely assume Hedberg will play nearly half of the games. Like the Devils did this season, up until the all-star break, it was 50-50 between Hedberg and Brodeur in terms of starts. Brodeur took over and played post all-star break through the playoffs. The thing is just keeping Brodeur fresh. He still has some good hockey in him.

I wish Lou would stop with his way of talking contract until after the season is over. He could have resigned Parise during the year and probably at a lesser rate than what Parise will get on the open market. |

Brodeur said David Clarkson was more nervous than him about Brodeur being a UFA.

In my opinion, the Devils are already putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage by not giving the No. 1 job to Hedberg outright. He has earned it with his play much more than Brodeur has over the last two seasons. |

It'll be 50-50. As much as we'd like at times for Hedberg to get the starting job, it's not going to happen. Brodeur has to much ego and the Devils aren't going to relegate him to back-up status. Hedberg is obviously content on being a back-up, after all, he resigned twice with the Devils. Hedberg is going to get at least 30 starts if not more. |

Hedberg's sample size is too low to assume that he would keep up those kind of numbers long term. I agree that Moose should get more starts but shouldn't get 60 games a year. |

I do understand the political reality of the situation. It just kinda sucks, and I would probably have mixed feelings (at best) today if I were a Devils' fan.

It's not like there were better options out there.
Gustavsson, C. Mason, even those options weren't your ideal situations. Brodeur was the best goalie to hit the UFA market. Hedberg was arguably the best back-up as well. |

Fair, and I think you're probably right. If ego and chemistry were no issue, and I was coaching the Devils, I would probably peg Moose for 50-55 regular season starts -- potentially adjusted up or down depending on how both guys play. |

I think they should just ride the hot goalie. Marty will obviously be our playoff goalie but in the regular season, who cares? Just need either to get the job done. |
