I'd say both Schenn x2 should stay...

Couturier?

[quote=bmeltzer]It has no effect on their ability to re-sign Suter and Weber if either/both are inclined to stay put for the long term.

Bill I think they need to focus on improving the defense. nash parise or ryan would be nice but defense should be the top priority.

If you can get Parise, you do it.

If Konopka's vaunted faceoff prowess and toughness are so valuable to his teams, why aren't the Sens very interested in bringing him back even though he only made $700,000 last year? Why did he only get into 55 games last season? Why was he on the market as a UFA for so long last summer? Why didn't the lowly Islanders decide they didn't want him back last summer? Why has he been on three different teams in the last three years? Why has he been on four different teams in the last five years? Why will his next team be sixth NHL club?

Those things tell me that the cons (constant dumb penalties, lack of speed, lack of hockey sense) outweigh any benefits he brings.

- bmeltzer

So, your not a big supporter of signing Konopka. I think your 100% right. He had a good playoff last year, he is good in the locker room, great with the media. But, Ottawa has decided to move forward. I just don't see a Flyer fit here.

I hope homer doesnt trade coots.

He better not be justifying it by saying its Carter + for Nash and Voracek.

If he says it enough he may believe it.

Nash to philly makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Let the rangers over pay for him. In more ways than one.
Does Holmgren have a guilty concious from the Carter/ Couturier and Czhecky trade?

- bird_dog

zero sense except it would provide further evidence that homer goes from yr to yr w/ no L-T plan or org philosophy to win a cup.

We will have one of Nash parise or Ryan by the end of the day and we will still have coots and both schenns

Hey Bill, what do you think Parise fetches today on the open market?

$7-8 mill per for 8-10 years?

Sadly this thinking has been reinforced by the Pronger deal and almost winning in 2010, plus the Carter/Richards trades and having some success in last years playoffs. I expect this pattern of behavior to continue.

Nash makes sense in one regard, it gives Giroux a dynamic winger to play with. His cap hit as well as the assets it would take to get him is what makes it a risky transaction.

The idea of getting Giroux a dynamic winger does make sense. Nothing else about it makes sense, which should result in the Flyers walking away.

In my opinion, all things considered, Holmgren has done a tremendous job as the GM of the Flyers.

The assests are the part I can't figure out. I can only see a deal for Nash being Read, Meszy, and a 1st. Then that means the Flyers must have a play for a defensman obviously in FA. I think we will see after today that 7.8 is right about where it should be for a player of his caliber (Dennis Wideman makes only 2.6 less).... still hate it though.

I tend to agree with you, I think maybe Holmgren can take Howson to the cleaners and steal Nash. Howsons incompetence cannot be understated.

Don't forget Voracek. He is complete fair game for a trade

I honestly don't see him going back to Columbus in a trade.

Oh I agree, I just dont wanna lose Coots. Thats where the sadly came in, I agree hes figured out this new cap-era NHL very well and isn't afraid to make the tough decisions to make the team better. I do however understand the let your talent develop approach and peoples frustrations.

I agree with your list but would also add the second Schenn.

Yes. I think even with front-loading, it will be a cap hit between $7.25M to $7.5M

I'd like to see the flyers sign gragnani off the bat. If suter re-ups with Nashville then they can consider a megadeal for weber (and would have another piece for it) If suter leaves I'd consider gragnani, mclement, and I'm liking doan at the right price. Doan and mclement can provide serious grit. Gragnani can run our 2nd pp

I agree but they can add all the top-flight defensemen in the world and it won't mean a thing unless the forwards buy into the team D concept. The Flyers already have more money committed to their blueline than any team in the NHL. Sadly, the Pronger situation really threw a wrench in the works for the team.

Truth is, we are not getting Parise.

Ryan and Nash aren't available at a price that makes sense

Suter isn't signing here.

I still think we can either target the second tier or keep powder dry until the trade deadline. If Anaheim sucks, they may be making deals a plenty. Same with Weber.

Dry powder. Chill.

That would be a huge PR disaster for Howson. Taking Jake back while losing Carter and Nash in the process. Ouch.

Anyone have interest in Salo for a year if he's cheap? Could be a good temporary fix if Kimmo is to be out a while.

If Howson really lowered the demands to something reasonable for both sides, I wouldn't be absolutely appalled by acquiring Nash. I'd probably be bummed for a while at how much was lost (even with lowered demands), but I don't know, that feeling could go away quickly when I see Nash and Giroux jumping over the boards together in October.

Even if he can do it without losing Schenn and Couturier, it'll still sting and be questioned until we see if Nash becomes a perennial 40-50 goal guy here or not.
