Fair point. I think the excitement is just out of 30 teams a player picked edmonton.
- Oilfan19

and props for that. i'm sure the guaranteed playing time in top minutes and the phone calls from Paul Coffey and the Great One helped tip the scales......

Ya well you guys better make a run in the next couple years. RNH, Hall, Eberle and Schultz will all need new contracts in 2 years.
- hertzman

thats all you nuck fans can say. Dont worry, we have more then enough cap space champ.

you woulda been better off signing Matt Gilmour...way bigger, has some seasoning now and Schultz has skinny Gilmour written all over him

It is not at all. He had 26 out of 29 teams in the league that wanted to sign him, and he chose the Oilers.
- SteveTambellini

If this is the "Decision" part 2, seems like Edmonton is literally the furthest from South Beach you can be.

I think Edmonton was the place to be for him. No pressure to win right now and he can get the minutes he needs. However, those games against Anaheim may be a bit tough.

This situation is def diff. And you know it.
- poisondhearts37

No I don't. I might agree that the Oil can't pay the likes of a Kovy or BobbyLou's 10+ year, 10+ million dollar contracts, but this case, ALL the teams were offering the EXACT same dollar figures.

It came down to a) how much playing time and b) the amazing future the Oil holds.

Gilroy wasnt even half as good in College as Shultz was. Just sayin.
- poisondhearts37

....agreed bad example, but you get my point. He is unproven and I'm amazed at the circus that has revolved around this situation

somebody better feed this fool cause about 29 teams are gonna be coming to crush this lil ant for the sideshow circus he put on. I say he's got BUST written all over him and he helps edmonton to another 29th overall finish. Then next year when all the entry levels are up and the cap is about 70% what it is now the Oil find out what having Kevin LOwe still running the shots means when they still suck and can't afford the 8 mil a season Hall and Eberle will both want.....
- RichardPeterNuss

What a terrible situation. We have so many good up and coming players that we might not be able to afford one of them in 3 years.

Use spacing in your next rant, that was a trainwreck to read through.

For the Oilers sake I hope he is better than both Ryan Murray and Griffin Reinhart.

....it'd be pretty hard to say no when two hall of famers go out of their way to call you, especially Gretzky. Well played by Edmonton. Gloat when he shows he was worth all the hoopla.

Smacked of desperation. But fuk it, we are.
Nice to see a attractive commodity choose edmonton.

Had no plans to say that. Hope he is as good as billed.

Bob McKenzie stated for at least the last 2months he was choosing Edmonton. I don't know that he had a "choice" to make, but, his agent probably convinced him to turn this into a three ring circus..

2 Years was the max any team could sign him, as per the CBA.
- oj4lif3

going to be an expensive few years for the oilers. Hall/Eberle negotiations in 2104, Nuge/Schultz year after that, then Nail.

Hopefully they get a cup shot before they lose some talent due to contracts

You know surprisingly little about the Oilers.

And, for someone who is trying to rip the Oilers, your team is not so far away from being in the exact same position the Oilers were 3 years ago. Before there was a salary cap it was all fine and dandy for Detroit but now you're (frank)ed. No Lidstrom, Stuart is gone, Datsyuk and Zetterberg aren't getting any younger, and no A-level prospects in the system to replace them. Your future is looking bleak indeed.

Kid wanted guaranteed ice time. There are only a few teams who could make that commitment. Sure alot of teams wanted him. But he already didnt want alot of teams. If van said ok we will give you top ice time there is a good chance he woulda signed there. This is situation is def diff than trying to get a Parise or B. Richards or Hossa in FA market.

Either way though. Congratz to you guys on getting the kid. You guys really need him and his Right hand shot. Hopefully he pans out.

yep. that'll bring some pressure though. whoever said there's no pressure to win in edmonton is probably going to be wrong this year, and schultz immediately becomes the highest profile D on the team now just because of this and the Gretz call etc.

Fair or not, (and it's not fair), he's a massive focal point next year on a team that should at least challenge for the playoffs so we'll see how he does. it'll be interesting.

..... I assume it feels a little like getting Regehr to waive his no trade clause and Ehrhoff to sign on the dotted line, I won't mention Leino
