Picking Edmonton gives him the best opportunity in a market that is all about hockey.

I am not worried about making the playoffs this season.
I am happy to see all our youngsters get more experience and gel as team.
A good run for a playoffs spot would be a bonus.

Interesting facts when the Oilers signed Dustin Penner to an offer sheet they ended up forfeiting the following assets.

1st Rounder in 2008 which the Ducks later sent to Buffalo whom selected Tyler Myers

2nd Rounder 2008 which Anaheim used to select Justin Schultz.

3rd Rounder Which ended up eventually being upgraded to a 2nd and traded to the Isles where they selected Travis Hamonic

Fortunately for the Oilers they were able to redeem themselves that draft by drafting Jordan Eberle 22nd overall with the pick acquired from Anaheim in the Chris Pronger trade.

I am sure many EDM fans were cheering for LAK to win the cup and congrats for winning this year. You don't have to congrats EDM for anything. EDM doesn't have a Drew Doughty, Schultz may not ever be even close to a Doughty, the team is simply trying to improve it's defense and hope to move in the right direction. Whether he is a bust or not, we won't know until the season starts and go on. EDM wasn't the team to hype him up, it's the media aka TSN.

I know Edmonton fans would be talking poop about him just like we are if they didn't get him, but they did so I understand why they're all of a sudden not talking poop like they were.

They can say it's jealousy.. that doesn't make sense, but whatever lets them sleep better at night. My problem with the kid is pretty much no NHL player, no matter how good or bad they are, have acted as selfishly and pooptly as this kid has, and he hasn't even played a game yet.

I hope for his sake and Edmonton's sake he grows the (frank) up. That just screams cancer.

I'm not certain I agree that he has been selfish.

He had options and he exersized them. That's no different than most others.

In the current situation he is being advised by others. He took the time to listen to offers, meet with coaching staffs and key organizational personnel.

He is a young player and it's important at this stage of his career to develop his potential. He obviously felt comfortable with the Oilers coaches and his opportunities.

This hardly makes him selfish. It's what he should be doing is taking a long term view of his career and finding the situation that works for him.

Well like the leafs fan just said, most people hadn't heard of shultz 3 months ago. Myself included. Can't fault him for the way the media has over blown this thing. He played within the ruled by not signing with the ducks and playing college hockey and waiting 2 years. Very true that he has not proven anything yet. Time will tell if he pans out and right now we are all going off of what the Scouts and experts are saying about him. I don't think he is being selfish however, a lot of this circus that has been going on can be blamed on his agents. No one has to congratulate the Oilers for signing an unproven talent. But the nice thing is, he was sought after by all 30 teams and he chose Edmonton, so after all the "no one wants to play there" crap. It is nice to have him pick the oil. I guess it like when buffalo convinced Regehr to waive his no trade and Ehrhroff signed on the line. We were happy and so should they be......baby steps. I also bashed the Leino signing in that post before they could do it. Fact is he was good in college, we'll se how he is in the NHL. Nothing is certain except that he's kinda a douche. But that's because he didn't sign with my team

Disappointed he didn't sign with the Canucks, yes, but he still would have been smarter to sign in NY or Ottawa, or any other playoff bound city. He will be in a pressure cooker now where as a rookie dman, he will be expected to perform at a very hight level and be the saviour of the franchise. On a better team, he may have gotten #4 or #5 minutes, but could ease into the lineup and be somewhat protected. Now he will be facing the other teams top forwards night in and night out. He'll be a good player, but defensively, he will get owned by the Pavel Datsuks of the league. I still say his decision was based on the opportubity to earn his $2.85M in bonus money, the playoffs obviously weren't a consideration.

Congrats on your cup win by the way. I couldn't be happier for Willie Mitchell.
