That's the same as saying the Leafs should pay top dollar for every UFA they can find because it would help them in the short term. Investing in the UFA market on a big, long term deal, is all about timing and about how badly you need to fill a hole. Is the timing right for Parise and does he fill a hole that the Leafs have? - Two_For_Truth
It's not the same as saying they should pay top dollar for everybody. You said it's not worth the risk because the player might not be the same in 5 years. So basically you're saying they shouldn't sign anybody to a long contract because there is that risk that they might drop in production. Getzlaf for instance, don't sign him because he's getting older? Malkin? Don't sign him because he might not be the 100 pt guy he is now. At what point is it ok to take the risk? Last I checked Parise is a pretty darn good player, do the Leafs have a full abundance of those guys that they shouldn't even bother looking at one in free agency?

It's about timing and about what the team needs. Getzlaf and Malkin would fill a much bigger need would they not? It's really easy to say, Parise is a good player, just sign him up long term. You could do that every single year and run out of cap space in a hurry. Why not sign Suter too? He's a darn good player too right?
Also, what reason does Parise have to sign in Toronto? He just finished going to the Cup finals with the Devils and he doesn't really look like he wants to go back there. I'd say that's a pretty clear indication that his standards are sky high and unfortunately, the Leafs don't seem like they could match that.

So you're saying signing Suter would be a bad move with the amazing D the Leafs have?

Greasy as (frank)
(but I wouldn't complain too much if they traded for him. yes I know how I've been with him but I'm tired of not having a goalie) - weirdoh
I'd like to see the Leafs and Habs get better, much, both teams. The rivalry now is not what it is when both teams are on top. It will never die but even one series against each other in the playoffs and hockey gets brought into a new hemisphere.
