Parise is pretty unlikely to turn into Gomez but the point is that if a player reaches his 30s and starts to under perform, he's no longer worth his price tag. Gomez gets paid 7+ million dollars but plays like a 1 million dollar player. That probably wouldn't happen with Parise but what if he gets paid 8 million and starts playing like a 4 million dollar player? Still effective but not what you're paying for.

That's the same as saying the Leafs should pay top dollar for every UFA they can find because it would help them in the short term. Investing in the UFA market on a big, long term deal, is all about timing and about how badly you need to fill a hole. Is the timing right for Parise and does he fill a hole that the Leafs have?

Basically, Kadri will need to outplay MacA to stay in the lineup, since he's the only winger in the top-6 i can see moving to the bottom-6. But then he'd also need to outplay Kulemin and Frattin, who both want that top-6 spot... He's probably better than them offensively, but Carlyle values defensive play.
