I can't see him turning to poop. But you're right it's a risk. But a risk a GM who needs to knock one out of the park should take. - weirdoh
Assuming Parise would come here for 8M per...you definitely make that signing. Unfortunately we'll likely be looking at Prust and some other role players filling in that 8 mill.
Though I'd be glad with Doan and Jokinen on short term, high-price contracts. |

And Suter, and Brodeur. - Feeling Glucky?
Imagine all the assists Brodeur would rack up dishing the puck out to Kessel from our own net? (frank), maybe he should play center |

Burke doesn't do front-loaded/cap circumvention deals. He's always said for the right player, he'd sign a long-term deal (see JVR: didn't sign him, but has no problem with his contract). - gravyface
JvR is making chump change when compared to the big boys... |

If he does, Lupul, MacArthur, or Kadri has to go. |

Front load the poop out of it like every other long term deal... it's not like we can't afford to pay him $12,000,000 for the first couple years... - SofaKingBored
Money isn't the problem. The cap hit is the problem and potentially having to get rid of a 33 year old player who doesn't earn his price tag. If you end up with a guy getting paid 8 million dollars a year when he doesn't play like it, you get Gomez in Montreal. |

Well the Leafs did allow more goals last year so it's not really that. It's about the Leafs having more established players that Burke wouldn't honestly be able to say Schultz could automatically play ahead of.
Looking at the Leafs, they have Phaneuf, Liles, Gunnarsson and Gardiner. You would assume that Schultz wants to play with Gardiner and in the top four but realistically it leaves Schultz on the bottom pairing or in the AHL to start the season. Compared that to the Oilers who have Petry, Whitney, Smid and then the fourth spot it's up for grabs and there's little chance of him ending up in the AHL. - Two_For_Truth
Thank you for disagreeing with me and then reiterating my post as the correct reason. It's really the only way people will agree with me. |

That's the risk you take to get 5 years of Parise at his best. There's lots of inconsistent players out there, who cost less, but are going to have up and down years. What separates the high-end players from the rest is that their "off years" are better than everyone else's good years. - gravyface
It's a risk that a team like the Penguins could make but the Leafs aren't suited for it. |

Again, it's not the term, nor the salary: it's the front-loaded cap circumvention deals. Burke would've had no problem signing Crosby's deal, Quick's deal, etc. |

Sign Parise and trade Lupul at a pretty high price while his value is at its highest |

I disagree...They only have one player signed for four years under Burke...That's not a long term deal... |

Isn't that what we did, signing him after B-Rad went to the Big Rotten Apple? We've been regretting it ever since......what makes you think another team would be dumb enough to do the same thing?
Then again, I'm sure Burke has Howson on speed-dial by now. - Phenom
have you not watched free agency since the beginning of time? another team always is dumb enough to do the same thing |

I don't have the attention span needed to do that...So, if we know Burke's m.o. then who in the hell will come to the Leafs? |

Parise is pretty unlikely to turn into Gomez but the point is that if a player reaches his 30s and starts to under perform, he's no longer worth his price tag. Gomez gets paid 7+ million dollars but plays like a 1 million dollar player. That probably wouldn't happen with Parise but what if he gets paid 8 million and starts playing like a 4 million dollar player? Still effective but not what you're paying for. |
