I think I have to agree on this number. I hope that 5 becomes below market value. They wont be able to replace what he does without spending pretty close to that as it is.
- MBFlyerfan

They will have to have other guys step up in bigger roles and I'm fine with that. They can add another veteran to go on the third pairing. Cant get crazy trying to retain Carle. Very nice player but the Flyers have to do whats best for the team.

5.25M max.

if carle won't accept a deal with a cap hit of $5mm or less i let his azz walk. we have 5 nhl caliber top 4 defensemen under contract, like Bill said he's not much more than an average defenseman. it is his right to seek out the most favorable contract he can be offered, but as a fan i feel lied to. he IS replaceable and Homer is creative. if he walks i won't miss him one bit.

Hawks blogger thinks they are trading Hjalmarsson.

He could fill in for Carle.

I wonder if Homer explored a JVR for NH deal at all?

Um agreed. Only way he leaves is if something went sour between him and management. I can't believe he would sign somewhere else.
- funmaster18

maybe he wants to finish his career in the sunshine state, and will go to florida or tampa bay, get a start on retirement while still getting paid

seriously, with Bernier from LA asking for a trade, and now Marty throwing his ring into the FA hat, the market for Luongo is getting smaller.

Van may have to just take a salary dump kind of trade rather then a hockey deal to move him

If they can get Salo for a decent deal (no more then 2 years plz) he would be a decent option if Carle is gone. Very strong offensively and IMO better in his own end the Carle. Yes he would only play about half the season, but the benefit to this is the Flyers may have to carry 8 defenseman if they re up with MAB, and Bourdon now will be guaranteed his ice time to develop.

Salo when healthy is an upgrade over Carle.

Overall Carle is better because of his age and durability, but if you can't get Carle, Salo would be an option to explore.

- Marc D

What about Adrian Aucoin? Could get him for 1.5MM on a 1 year deal. Can pass, shoot, and hit. Injuries obviously a concern.

On what basis is Carle going to be the 6th defenseman? And that 3.5M number is just a random number brouoght out of thin air without any thought whatsoever behind it. Wideman may be a better PP QB then Carle. But he is not a better overall player. And why is Carle playing 23-25 minutes a game when Pronger isn't there, if he is so lost without Pronger. That's another myth.
- MJL

Hahahahaha you're actually defending Carle?  Give me a break dude.  Yes he'd be the 6th defenseman.  You're seriously telling me that you think that Carle is more valuable then Timonen, Coburn, Meszaros, Grossman and now Luke Schenn?  Please give us a break.  Yea I pulled 3.5 mil out of thin air not the Flyers payroll from last season.  Maybe he was playing that many minutes because Meszaros was out for an extended period of the season and Grossman was in and out of the lineup due to injury as well.  Ever think about the FACT that Laviolette has no choice, due to the lack of healthy bodies?  Nah didn't think so.  Just because Mr Meltzer said Carle is a better all around player than Wideman, doesn't mean it's not debatable.  Because in my opinion Wideman is a heck of a lot better of a player than Carle.  He was the Capitals number one defenseman last season.  He moves the puck better, has a howitzer of a shot, is more physical and gets the puck out of the zone way faster than Carle.  Do some research and watch some games and try to draw your own opinions on things once in a while, instead of borrowing everyone else's.

I would be pumped about that... Chicago would want picks in return right Marc because Hjalmarsson is a salary dump technically right?

This comes down to money for me.

For all of the talk of overpaying for Suter, it appears the team may face the same situation with Carle.

If they have to wait till next season to further improve the blueline so be it, however I would in no way be in favor of locking up Carle long term for a contract over 5 million.

Cap space is precious and just because there is a lack of good d-men in UFA, the Flyers shouldn't kiss his ass simply because other teams are willing to do so.

If the Flyers lose Carle and trade for JayBo I will puke.

Calgary just re-signed Sarich. They have 10 d-man now on their roster.

I'd ask for Matt Read and a first round pick... I mean they probably ask for B Schenn or Couts but that's not realistic for the Flyers. Don't know if Read and a first would be enough for a top four puck moving defensman. Hjalmarsson had some struggles this year though.

I saw a lot of Salo in Vancouver.

Love his game but the guy always gets injured. Not worth it.

Aucoin is questionable defensively and somewhat slow.

All this talk about the need to get a #1 d-man, we should have kept JVR and traded Schenn is ridiculous. If a top pairing d-man is the toughest position to fill, why would the teams already have one want to deal them? Subban and Bogosian are both RFA for a few more years, do you really believe they would part with either player even if the return was Schenn or Coots as the centerpiece.? Nashville is in danger of losing Weber for nothing at the end of next year, I haven't even read there is a sniff of him being available? But hey, let's just offer Schenn and/or Coots because they have to like that deal. If it works in NHL '12, it has to work in the real world right?

Maybe, just maybe Homer isn't as stupid as people might think. Maybe Homer did his due diligence and realized the best way to upgrade the defense is to trade for a 22 year old d-man who still has potential to get better and give up a young forward asset that in theory the team has an abundance before the trade.

I would hope the Flyers don't go over $5.5 million for Carle, which in turn I believe he will sign somewhere else. Someone is going to overpay for him just like Leino with Buffalo last year.

- ravishingone

all of this talk of getting one of the common pieces required for most cup winners is really nuts, I know.

all of this talk that the flyers can't draft and develop their own guys so that they end up overpaying for FAs, having to rely on making coburn-type trades or weak value ones like the JVR, one is also crazy.

and any discussion that homers done anything but master cap mgmt ought to have one committed - got it

MAB would be fine in the third pairing role. I think he will only get better with experience. I have no problem with him at all.
- ravishingone

I like him. I do have some concern about the concussions, however.
