If Carle could receive 6MM you HAVE to let him walk.

its has nothing to do with a lovefest or thinking he is all that. the alternatives out there are few. they are a better team with him than without
- nastyflyergirl

That is completely a short sided statement. Of course they are better with him than without him. But they are not better with him at any price.

Even if Carle did return this season, he'd be the Flyers 6th defenseman and isn't worth anything more than 3.5 mil in my opinion.  I'd take Dennis Wideman at the 5 mil per he got from Calgary any day.  To say that Carle is comparable to Wideman isn't accurate at all.  Wideman runs the powerplay like a tuxedo and plays in all different situations.  Carle is at best a number 4 defenseman and doesn't possess the skills to run a powerplay like Wideman.  He's looked pretty lost without Pronger next to him over the past season and a half.  I'm gonna laugh my ace off at the team that pays Carle 5-6 million per.  What a joke that would be.  I'd love to have him back as a number 6 at the salary he's been getting over the past few seasons, but not a penny more.  Bourdon as a number 6 would be fine with me.
- TonyBazz

On what basis is Carle going to be the 6th defenseman? And that 3.5M number is just a random number brouoght out of thin air without any thought whatsoever behind it. Wideman may be a better PP QB then Carle. But he is not a better overall player. And why is Carle playing 23-25 minutes a game when Pronger isn't there, if he is so lost without Pronger. That's another myth.

If they can get Salo for a decent deal (no more then 2 years plz) he would be a decent option if Carle is gone. Very strong offensively and IMO better in his own end the Carle. Yes he would only play about half the season, but the benefit to this is the Flyers may have to carry 8 defenseman if they re up with MAB, and Bourdon now will be guaranteed his ice time to develop.

Salo when healthy is an upgrade over Carle.

Overall Carle is better because of his age and durability, but if you can't get Carle, Salo would be an option to explore.

i've been beating that drum for a few weeks. and i think he signed a one year deal last year. would be great if he were willing to do that again, except in philly this time

put the phone in kimmo's hand haha

seems as tho Coburn and Grossmann were more of a priority to sign. Doesn't mean they don't want Carle. I think they definitely do and I really hope it gets done. I love the idea of Coburn/Grossman/Schenn/Carle/Meszaros/Timonen/Bourdon/Lilja as the 8 dmen.
- nastyflyergirl

Or it just means that they were able to come to an agreement with Coburn and Grossmann before coming to one with Carle.

i see the first poster's point though... was it the flyers priority, or were those guys just easier to sign? maybe carle's been playing hardball with an eye toward july

of course, it's total speculation. but the possibility is there. and i think it's just as likely as the flyers just valuing the other players more

- FlyerMike18

definitely, we really don't know what is going on behind the scenes

Carle has been in the organization for a few years now. The Flyers brass know him inside and out. Why has it now gone to ufa for him to try to be resigned? Are they still on the fence? No money anytime in the past 3 years? Or does he simply not want to really be here? Coburn locked up well ahead of time. Even Grossmann got it done rather quickly in his short time here.

To me, this is shades of Leino - they give him an in-season offer extension, he turns it down, and they agree to talk about it in July.

- LW2530

Tagging space, he couldn't be signed before 7/1

you just have to be ready for the injuries

Jagr will look like iron man Rod Brind'amore compared with how fragile Salo is.

A player's contract can only be extended when his is in the final year of his current contract.

OK, who is going to sign Carle for 6+?

Give me your best guesses.

I'll say Edmonton if they don't nab Schulz.

What makes you think shelley wont be wavied? there is less room this year then there was last for him. Sestio is 5 times the player he is.
- mace14

If Sestito gets within 300 NHL games of Shelley's, he'll have done well for himself. Five seasons into his pro career, the 25-year-old Sestito is 286 games away from getting to half of Shelley's number of NHL games.

Not saying that Sestito isn't the better or more affordable option for the Flyers next year or that Sheley won't be waived. Sestito is much younger, a better skater and physically stronger. At the AHL level, he's shown flashes of finishing ability.

But to say Sestito is a much better player than Shelley is to ignore the fact that Shelley has brought plenty of intangibles that Sestito has thus far lacked.

Got a feeling that Pittsburgh might be a bidder if they can't get Suter.

I get ur point, but someone is going to give 6mil. I dont think he makes or breaks our cup chances, and id much rather go into next offseason with enough funds to offer a max contract to Weber, but its not crazy that Carle is worth 6 to someone. IF its Detroit are we gonna say they dont know what the heck their doing? I doubt it. With the current D I dont think hes worth 6, 5 is a stretch. Theres other avenues to go to improve team D than signing Carle at a big tag.
- aosplayo

Yes, if the Detroit Red Wings give Matt Carle 6MM I will seriously contemplate if they know what they are doing. A competitive team that will be close to the cap every year can't be giving Matt Carle 6MM a year. There is nothing in his career that justifies that. And before someone says well if he gets paid it then some one saw something... it's supply and demand. There is a large demand for top 4 defenseman this offseason. There is extremely little supply. Think 1980 gas situation.

love would be a little strong for me, but we would have a solid d, if not necessarily dynamic. I think they would be overly expensive, but w/ kimmo out of the picture going forward, maybe we could finally snag a real prospect who would be good enuf to start out and grow as a third pair guy.

They r gonna trade jake and Carle's rights for Ryan today. I just have a feeling
- griouxmvp2012

Unless Anaheim is prepared to overpay greatly, Carle's rights have absolutely no value to them.

That would be priceless.

That would be the softest defense in the league.

I would be perfectly fine with the Pens signing Carle at 6 mil a season.
